Game of Thrones (spoiler-free zone)

A few have suggested it, might as well test the waters. The idea is to give people who haven't read the books a safe place to talk about the show.

A few quick ground rules:
  • No Spoilers!!!!! for upcoming episodes.
  • Larger Song of Ice and Fire discussion should be limited to the other thread although I think a tiny bit of book delving to fill in holes should be okay (example of this would be talking about Catelyn and her treatment of the wolves in the novel, which was alluded to on TV but never really made clear...)
  • Everything that happened that week is fair game once an episode airs. So if you don't watch on Sunday night, I'd stay outta here until you do...

Well, Robert laid out exactly what would happen, right? That scene where he's talking to Cercei in a civil conversation. Literally the ONLY civil conversation they ever had. The "five or one" speech. Embedding prohibited but I found it.

You should also remember that Varys (the Eunuch) has been working behind the scenes to help restore the Targaryens for quite some time -- even before Robert died. They would likely have other allies in Westeros.

Jorra also tells her that the army she needs is already in Westros and Daario also tells her that "anyone can buy" an army. Her stint with the Dolthraki and now with the Unsuillied (& company) are just tests, getting her ready/experience for ruling. It's pretty blatantly setup for her to rule Westeros. IMO the only people who have it right so far are the Brotherhood Without Banners.. monarchy is clearly an outdated and disastrous form of organization

Well, yes, but that isn't at all what he was saying/asking, was it? He was asking how the Dothraki could have succeeded in an invasion of Westeros.

They may very well have succeeded. I was just speaking on how impractical the Dothraki army would have been in laying siege on any fortress in Westeros. It likely would have been the Targaryen name or the dragons that actually won her back the throne.

Imagine 40,000 shirtless dudes on horseback trying to take Winterfell

Just a brief bit from actual world history -- when the Mongols conquered, they often identified skilled tradesman, engineers and the like, and impressed them into their army. As a result, they became very successful at sieges, actually.

Winterfell gets surrounded and starved out. It's landlocked, so they're ****ed once the food runs out.

King's Landing would be much tougher as it had access to open water. The dothraki, hating water, would struggle with that one.

Well, I cheated and watched the first 4 episodes, so now that everyone is up to date....I think Stannis is going to kick the bucket. Why? Because I'm starting to root for him.

They have to get there first. Plus, they wouldn't be equipped for winter. The first night it drops below freezing could kill a large chunk of the Dothraki army.

Yeah, the cold in the North would be a killer as well.

Hardly matters. The North would be last on their list anyway, most likely.

This. A lot.

And Viserys, having taken the throne, could use crown funds to form an army that could take the North.
