Renovating a Kitchen. Looking for Advice.

Mrs. Buehler445 and I are buying a different house. It is really what we want in terms of size, layout, neighborhood, etc. The only drawback is there are no upper cabinets in the kitchen...WTF? Anyway, we made the decision to man up and put in a kitchen that we want.

Since I'm a home renovation n00b, I'd appreciate any advice, tips, or experiences the CP braintrust can provide.

In doing this, we are going to have to come up with,

Cabinets (obviously)

Countertop

Backsplash

Moving the sink I hate plumbing. But it shouldn't be too bad, the plumbing is in an unfinished portion of the basement

Flooring which I'm pretty comfortable with.

Most of the work will be hired, partially because I'm a noob. Partially because I'm busy as ****.

TIA

EDIT: Already have the antifreeze tap on order.

Anybody know of a good laminate floor, that doesn't go nuts and warp when it gets wet? When I purchased my house, they already had wood laminate floor and apparently it had even just got wet from trying to clean it with a mop and in the corner it's kind of bowed at the joints.

I saw some laminate flooring that appeared to come in planks, that had a faux stone or marbling finish that looked pretty slick. Just wanting something inexpensive that will last and going to rent this house when I move out of it in the next 6 months.

Well yeah, but everything is on a sliding scale. I highly consider cost and value. Obviously there are more expensive and more durable options, but they come at a cost. I'm looking at cost benefit analysis. I don't really want to put expensive flooring down if I'm going to have renters. They will ruin it, eventually, and it will probably have a lower useful life than normal. You could put in nice marble floor and a renter could POSSIBLE ruin in one year.

I have some respectable tile in my current kitchen (not the one in the picture) and it is damn durable. It is far better than vinyl or laminate. No idea about cost.

I put in laminate floor planks throughout my living/dining area. It was $1.99/sq ft. If you go that route, do it right.
We went with a 10mm size I believe and it had a pad attached to it. We also laid out another pad as added support. It's been 2 1/2 years and nothing has warped.

My buddy did his also, but with an 8mm plank and no attached pad. His has warped in several places.

My daughter has spilt everything on it without any issues.

Oklahoma is rubbing off on you bud!

That's good info. Thanks. I think wife and I will probably go this route. She doesn't like the tile in our current house because of the grout.

Because of my text, I had dreams that my floor became warped and I had to tell everyone on CP that I was a liar.

A friend of mine was in a meeting with the owner of a very large American furniture company that pays taxes and is a good corporate citizen, and this debacle infuriates the industry. They're just exporting tax-free profit out of the country through a bunch of shells.
If your bar for shopping at a business is that they don't try to dodge taxes, you must have a pretty small number of businesses you interact with.

So what kind of flooring do you guys suggest other than tile?

I was kind of set in a nice tile. Wife said she hates tile because the grout is hard to get clean.

I think her issue is the grout is lower than the tile so it collects dirt.

I'll definitely run by the darker grout idea.

We used bamboo flooring. It's harder than other wood flooring and it looks better than laminate.

Under counter is lower maintenance.

No visible caulk to get shitty and need replacing.

Also don't have the edge where the two meet to collect gunk and grit. The under sink might still get nasty between between the sink and counter where they meet, but you won't know it/see it.

This is probably true. Just Americans perceive European style cabinets as cheap compared to our faceframe standard.

Glad we didn't need to deal with WWII to the extent that it changed our cabinetry. Lol
