MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

You folks realize MicJones disagrees about that play right? He says Alex couldn't have made it because he would have to throw across his body.

He makes an interesting point.

You are fine with Chiefs fans being miserable as long as your champion is happy, eh?

I love his girlish, hands on-hip poses. And that lispy, queenish voice!

Hell, if Andy just wanted a queer to pal around with, we could have sent YOU over to One Arrowhead Drive!

Ain't that right, bitch?

I have a suspicion about that play, that I haven't spoken on because frankly I'm tired of arguing with people. And I'm sure I will be derided here, but the issue has come up yet again.

It's pretty clear that Tyreek was aggressively used as a decoy early in this game. My sense is, he was sent on the pattern with instructions to operate as a decoy, probably to draw the FS, which he got at least a strong lean out of him [though Kelce contributed to that as well]. The RB out of the backfield running to the top of the screen was probably designed to do a more aggressive fly pattern, and Alex ranged right to set up for a pass over the man coverage, without the FS in danger of ranging over.

Should we have an offensive system where Tyreek AND Smith instinctively know that when he's coming that wide open to ditch the decoy pretense and go with it? Perhaps.

Was the RB wrong to sit down as long as he did under the coverage before running fly? He's opening wide, as wide as Reek on the other side, when Smith runs out of real estate.

Was the play that resulted due to Smith being locked in to Reek being a decoy, or was it Smith being convinced that Reek would not be ready for a pass since he went out as a decoy? Who knows.

But I don't think it was a brain fart or a panic. Smith was designed to roll out right. Only the spy was tracking him down too fast, and the RB ran past coverage too late.

No ****ing way, especially when he is looking right at it.

After he runs to his right, yes. But before that he was straight on.

Another thing I'd like to bring up because you all are distracted with Alex Smiths play funny how Dion Lewis was able to get back and had no issues with his knee while all 3 guys for us did. How is it the Chiefs medical staff isn't being scrutinized is beyond me.

Bull SHIT.

He saw Harrison, shat his pants, and "improvised" into his usual sideline shimmy and throw away.

It makes all the women in Kansas City puke.

This is how MEN play the position of NFL quarterback with a free rusher coming at them.
