yah it was fairly minor , compared to 89
the Richter scale is crazy , If i understand it properly (every full mag = 10 times more power) the earthquake we had was a 6.0 Mag in 89 it was 6.9 so the 89 quake was 9 times more powerful than 2014........that seems almost impossible But yah

By the way, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also has some good advice about what to do during an earthquake. Their advice is tailored to whether you are indoors or outdoors at the time and further tailored to specific situations.

I have read a lot of conflicting things about the 'get under the desk' advice.
I would never, ever have my family get under the desks in our house....but thats just me..In the time it takes to get under the desk in the office I would be out the ****ing door!

I'm within 150 miles North of Sacramento, didn't feel a thing, woke up for work at 0345.

Further complicating matters, the magnitude scales describe amplitudes on a seismograph, not the actual energy. The amount of energy that is generated is more relevant in terms of what the earthquake can do. To convert relative differences in magnitudes into differences in energy, you have to multiply the difference in magnitude by 1.5 and then use that product as the exponent, as is explained by the USGS (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/top...uch_bigger.php) In this case, the ratio of the energy from the two quakes (Loma Prieta versus Napa) would be 10 ^ (1.5 * 0.9) = 10 ^ 1.35 = 22.4 The above calculation is probably the basis for the USA Today article that reports that the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was "more than 22 times stronger" than the recent Napa earthquake. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...ison/14527315/ Pardon my being so pedantic about this. I'm a statistics professor and probably can't help it. |

Talked to a good friend in Napa this afternoon. He said it was the real deal, some really spectacular homes do have damage. Some wineries suffered losses of wine and fermentation facilities have been damaged. Was good to know they were ok but still will be a while till damage is fully assessed.

I was at Coalinga, CA for a 6.2 in 1983 & was on the Sausalito flats for the 6.9 Loma Prieta. Both times I bolted outside at the 1st hint. I can't help it. Just don't want the dang building falling in on me. Gotta fight that urge if I'm ever in the City during a quake.... the falling glass thing. Every Planeteer should know exactly how to shut off the gas to their abode & get in the habit of shutting it off once you get outside in a quake. If I were brave enough to be a stay-inside person I'd be way scared of a gas leak. Eerie as hell in 1989 looking across the Bay at night & watching the SF Marina district burn from the gas leak fires.

I dont mind at all... its just weird that a 7.0 is suppsoed to be 10 times stronger than a 6.0 but a 6.9 is 22 times stronger than a 6.0 But thats why I am not a mathematician!

I was up here for Loma as well... I have felt maybe 1 other quake as strong as this one, but never been as scared... I guess because this one woke me up from a dead sleep and I have a wife and child and am supposedly an adult now, I started over thinking shit like after shocks and what not. We will have to watch a Chiefs Chargers game some time since we are so close (no homo) I promise if the earth quakes it will just be the rumble of your loins

Compared to a magnitude 6.0 earthquake, a 7.0 would have 10^1=10 times higher amplitude on the seismic waves, which would translate to 10^1.5=31.6 times more energy. |

Just a matter of time for us in So.Cal. I can literally see the San Andreas Fault from our house. I figure it will be quick and relatively painless. Unlike what the Chiefs do to me.

I was in Napa for vacation with the lady. I've never been in an earthquake before. I woke up thinking she was jumping on the bed. We'd been tasting all day and I was still a bit drunk and remember saying 'what the **** are you doing!?' Just as the lamp next to me flew off of the table. We had violent shaking for about 20 seconds or so and then it slowly eased off. Other than a near miss by a tornado a few years back it was the most terrifying 30 seconds of my life. It was paralyzing. Neither of us knew what to do...we read about safety measures before the trip, but completely froze up when the shit got real.
TL;DR : earthquakes suck.
