Simply Red got me thinking...
SR is all about good old comfort food... food that brings back memories.
I'm wondering what you ate for lunch in high school? Did you bring your lunch, did you buy the hot lunch, did you go out for something better? We had the innovative "scramble" system when I started high school. That meant you could get the hot lunch or go to the "deli" for sandwiches, sides and a dessert. To be honest, I think most of my lunches were from Smaks. They had great burgers and we got out of the building (honestly or not) |

My grade school lunch consisted of a sandwich, Kitty Clover chips, Banana Flip an a thermos of water and root beer fizzies. Now this wasnt set in stone but was a favorite.

I usually just had the hot lunch. Elementary school was pretty bad for the most part, you just ate it because you were hungry and had no choice. By the time I finally got to high school there were more options, they had a pretty decent salad bar that I hit up any time I didn't like what they were serving for the hot lunch.

Had a hot lunch from Grade 2 on in Catholic school. I loved it, except their potatoes were packaged and tasted like glue so I had to stuff them in my pockets or my milk carton, especially on Shepherd's Pie day in order to escape the prying eyes of certain nuns/teachers.
But everything else was delicious to me. American chop suey, burgers and fries, pizza, chicken, fish sticks, mac and cheese, spaghetti and meatballs, always some cooked veggies like carrots, peas, broccoli or salad, fruits and deserts like jello, cake, brownies and milk to drink. Often there were two entrees so you could pick but not always. We'd get a snack during the day at some point, usually potato chips of crackers and some milk. Think it was mid-morning as we started early. High School was completely different. The hot lunches looked disgusting to me. Ugh! it made me retch when I saw even the sandwiches they had use butter on them. Yuck!!! I would get an ice cream sandwich and starve. Mom didn't make lunch or breakfast anymore, we had to do it. Then from Sophomore year on up, I was always trying to lose 5 lbs to get below 110 lbs because of the fashion mags. I was obsessed with being very thin. So I would make a lettuce sandwich on extra thin bread, with diet mayo and starve all day. That was one phase. Or skip it all together cuz I was grossed out half the time. |

Thursday was pizza day for us. Friday was no red meat day which still irritates me to this day since it was a public school.

I usually just ate out of the vending machines in high school. Middle school had the best food though. Weird rectangular pizza that was oddly good. Burritos, etc
