I bet this is going to be fun for you. That's cool. Actually my plan is to be on a lake in my bass boat fishin away during the eclipse. I think top water will be great for about 10 minutes.

I'm taking the day off, heading as far north as I can get on old county roads. Sounds like SJ is going to be insane.

It might be one of those things that make fish bite.

I've been going over some of the roads off of 75 highway. Not sure which one I'll take but if the traffic starts getting stupid I'm pulling off somewhere.

Highway patrol has stated they will allow people to park alongside the highway but you are required to be 100% on grass. NOT on the shoulder AT ALL.

The brand that they have at Hy-Vee are NASA approved. Springfield has been pretty hit or miss on places to find glasses and having any available. I had a friend drive down from KC, and she brought a ton of glasses she got from Hy-Vee. On Wednesday this week, our Hy-Vee had 3000 for sale and were limiting a max of 5 per customer. They had a line out the door, and they ran out. They're getting a shipment of 5000 in between 8am and 10am this morning. As of 7:30, there were already over 700 people in line. Plus, they jacked up the price. They were selling them for 2/$5, and now they're 2/$7. Glad I picked mine up when I did.

We're scheduled to have 98% coverage here, and that's good enough for me. You couldn't pay me to drive anywhere on Monday. Well, you could pay me, but it would have to be worth it.

one more thing. there is a guy that says that eclipses and the closeness of the moon can cause earthquakes. Lets see if there is one or others during this time.

Jim Berkland-predicted the SF 1989 earthquake. Passed away a year or so ago.

Eh, that doesn't make a lot of sense. The moon isn't any closer or further during an eclipse than it is at other times. It just happens to pass in front of the sun at that time.

For what it's worth, the difference in terms of brightness between 99% and 100% is greater than the difference between 0% and 99%.

But regardless, you should go out and take a look.

Pretty cool video that simulates what totality will be like.

For those who will be heading to the path of totality, note that you should be able to see Venus (almost certainly), Jupiter (probably), Mars (maybe), and Mercury (probably not) during the eclipse. Pick up your favorite sky finder app to see where to look.

I should have explained myself a little bit better. Berkland claims that when the moon is closer to the Earth, its gravitational pull increases and makes the plates of the earth move or slide faster than at other times. I am not sure right now how close the moon would be to the Earth at that point or if there is any difference at all. If the moon would be a little bit closer on that day then there could be a slight chance increase for earthquakes.

And if anybody just looking for a great way to look at the sky to program stellarium is a great program.. Sometimes it's free

Yeah, there can be some truth to the idea that the moon's gravitational pull can have an influence. It's just that there's not really much of a correlation between the moon's distance to earth and an eclipse (though technically it's closer during total eclipses than it is in annular eclipses). It's closer today than it will be on Monday, and it was far closer back in May than it is today.
