The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

Alex Smith made a lot of strides this year. He was actually throwing it to his receivers (something he struggled with the first Harbaugh year) and outside of 1 horrible game he had a few 'I didn't realize he could do that!' games as well.

He absolutely played like an elite QB @ Arizona for one...and I'm sorry, I realize Jim Harbaugh is a great coach and I realize Smith was surrounded with a SURPLUS of talent but you can't tell me Jim Harbaugh could take Matt Cassel and turn him into what Alex Smith was this year.

and Smith was benched after going 18-19 @ Arizona (a really good pass defense) with 3 TD's and then starting a game @ the Rams (an underrated defense) 8-9 with a TD.

Hey, I really want Geno...but I'm a Chiefs fan so I'm used to this garbage. I can't quit this team so it's not even worth trying.

I'd rather have Geno but 5 years of Trent Green clone isn't the WORST thing that has ever happened to us.

I realize it is frustrating, I'm frustrated. I really hope this isn't true.

and then when it is true...I'm really going to hope we can trade down and still take Geno, even though I realize that will be the biggest pipe dream ever.
Alex Smith is probably more talented than Trent Green, bigger arm, more mobile... but he hasn't obviously translated that success onto to the field. We had a huge huge thread about this a while back. He's not a Cassel, Huard, etc... a late round pick trying to get by... Alex Smith was the #1 overall pick in the draft. He is talented. He probably had just as much pure talent coming out as Geno. Really he was basically Geno... a college QB who put up great numbers, great bowl game performances, from a spread offense in a draft where not everyone was sold on one guy.

Difference is Trent Green could run Al Saunders 7 billion page offense frontways, sideways and backwards. Not sure if either Smith would be able to do that out of the box.

oh if we trade for Smith and don't take a round 1 QB it's playoffs next year or bust and I'd fully expect a win as well

that's what this move would have to be

it's a 'must win now' move when we hold the #1 pick.

so if we land Alex and he doesn't play well and we win 6 games next year it was an epic fail and I'll already be ready for a new regime (again)

All of you questioning how a league transaction could be done so early are likely the same ones that think the start of free agency is the first time teams talk to players.

No, man. I don't blame anyone. I'm included in that group. It just baffles me how rumors spread like wildfire in today's social media-driven society.

Or at least extract a hefty ransom out of the Eagles or someone else for that 1.1 and take someone like Floyd; a potential difference maker.

But do you think that's going to happen? No, of course it isn't. If we take Alex Smith, we're taking that overrated schmuck who's probably going to be the 3rd best tackle in the draft behind Fisher and Lane Johnson when all is said and done.

This move, in a vacuum, could be a good one. But the Chiefs will **** it up because the Chiefs always **** it up.

This could all be posturing by San Fran to drive up Alex Smith's value before the draft.
