This may actually be a time where the player holds out all year. The franchise tag salary would easily be beneath his worth.

Contract talks between the Denver Broncos and their star linebacker Von Miller have halted, increasing the possibility the defending Super Bowl champs will play the 2016 season without their best defensive player.
The Broncos set a deadline of 10 p.m. Tuesday to reach an agreement on a long-term contract with Miller, who was the MVP of the team’s Super Bowl 50 win in February. Absent an agreement, the Broncos said they would withdraw their multiyear contract proposal and make no multiyear proposals, leaving Miller to play the 2016 season on his $14.129 million "exclusive" franchise tag.

The Broncos slightly backed off that ultimatum Wednesday with a team source acknowledging the Tuesday deadline, but saying Miller didn't accept the proposal and the team is now reassessing.

It's semantics to suggest Miller declined the Broncos' proposal. He did agree to two elements of the Broncos' proposal -- the six years in length and $114.5 million in total value. Instead of "rejecting" Miller was seeking to continue negotiating the contract's structure -- specifically the guaranteed dollars -- when the deadline passed.

What's clear is negotiations have not been "a peaceful thing,'' as Miller predicted the day after his Super Bowl MVP performance. The two sides can't even agree on how talks broke off.

Miller said during a White House press conference Monday that "real progress" had been made in contract negotiations in recent days. And the two sides did reach a partial agreement on the years and total value that would have averaged $19.083 million a year, a tad more than the $19.0625 million average Miami’s Ndamukong Suh received in 2015 to become the NFL’s highest-paid defensive player.

However, there are significant differences in how the proposals are structured. The key component to any NFL contract is the guaranteed dollars, particularly within the first three years. The Broncos full guarantee proposal to Miller is $38.5 million through the first two years of the contract (there is another $1.3 million in workout bonuses). Suh,in contrast, had $50 million in guarantees his first two seasons.

Suh, though, had the leverage of an unrestricted free-agent market. Miller's rights are restricted to the Broncos because they slapped him with the "exclusive" franchise tag in March.

The Broncos' self-imposed deadline in negotiations was surprising considering the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement gives teams until July 15 to work out a multiyear contract extension with franchised tag players. The Broncos moved up their deadline with Miller to Tuesday because they wanted him to attend the team’s minicamp this week.

Past experiences with Ryan Clady and Demaryius Thomas provided Broncos general manager John Elway with the motive to move up his deadline on Miller.

Clady received the franchise tag in 2013 and Thomas in 2015. Both missed their entire offseason workout program before signing their long-terms deals prior to training camp in July.

Clady, a former All Pro left tackle, received a five-year, $52.5 million extension, then suffered a season-ending foot injury in Game 2 of 2013, played through rust in 2014 and suffered another season-ending injury on the first day of OTAs in 2015.

When paycut negotiations broke down this year, Clady was traded to the New York Jets. The Broncos wound up paying $33 million in three years of that Clady extension.

Thomas received a five-year, $70 million deal last summer and although he had 105 catches in 2015, his yards per catch went down from 15.1 in the first five years of his career to 12.4 in 2015, his touchdowns decreased from 11 in 2014 to six last year, and his drops went up.

Miller, though, is the face of Denver's devastating defense. One problem the Broncos and Miller’s camp confronted during negotiations was the difference between fair value in the open, free-agent market, and the franchise-tag market.

The Broncos have the right under the CBA to slap the franchise tag on Miller each year for three consecutive years at $14.129 million in 2016, $16.955 million in 2017 and $24.4 million for 2018. That’s a three-year total of $55.48 million.

The Broncos believe they have been more than fair with Miller because their offer significantly exceeded the first, second and third-year franchise tag amounts.

Miller’s camp, led by agent Joby Branion, has previously pointed out his dominance -- Miller all but single-handedly won Super Bowl 50 with his two strip sacks that led to two touchdowns in a two touchdown victory against Carolina – and the fact nearly every other first-round standout from the 2011 draft received contract extensions before they became eligible for free agency -- and the franchise tag.

Miller’s reps have referred not only to Suh’s contract, but the recent $17 million a year deal the New York Giants gave defensive lineman Olivier Dean that included $29 million in year one cash. Vernon has 29.0 career sacks and no playoff appearances. Miller has 60.0 career sacks and 6.5 more in the postseason.

It’s unclear whether Miller would play on the $14.129 million tag if it comes to that. It’s possible he could sit out the season because that would prevent the Broncos from again applying the “exclusive” franchise tag on him next year. And the compensation for other teams to sign away a second-year franchise tag player who sits out the previous year would drop from two, first-round draft picks to a first and third-round draft pick.

If Miller plays in 2016, the Broncos would have the right to again slap him with the "exclusive" franchise tag, albeit with a 20 percent raise. But it would still keep him off the market.

Finanically, then, it could be more advantageous in the long run for Miller to not play on the "exclusive" franchise tag, even while forfeiting $14.129 million, than play on it.

The problem with guaranteed money is that he would get it even if he was arrested for mass murder. That's a significant risk for the Broncos.

These franchised players typically don't get their deal until the week of the deadline. Hell, DT got his contract done 10 minutes before the deadline last year.

Had Miller kept his nose clean from the very get go and not disappear on the field(inconsistent motor) his first 2.5-3yrs he would have a deal already done IMHO. They don't trust his character with an overly large amount of guaranteed $ especially now with a SB ring on his finger and all the celebrity off the field activities that have followed. I think the Broncos brass don't feel Von will stay motivated/hungry for the $$ he is asking and the brass will only go so far because his history is a good indicator especially when you are fat and happy who absolutely loves weeeeeed.
