World Anti-Doping Agency: Russia Should be Banned from the 2016 Olympics

http://www.bbc.com/sport/athletics/34765444

http://espn.go.com/olympics/trackand...field-athletes

After a long investigation, WADA just released a shocking report today accusing the Russian Federation of running a huge state-sponsored doping scheme, including helping their athletes avoid detection in drug testing. They named 10 Russian athletes and coaches who should be banned for life, and given how corrupt Russia apparently is and the little amount of time remaining to the next olympic games, they also recommend that the IOC ban Russia from competing in Rio. (Not sure if the recommendation is just Russia's track and field team, or all of their athletes)

The IOC is not obligated to agree to the recommendation, but there's pressure all over the world on the IOC to hammer Russia.

Or they just played well for two games out of five. I suppose it is easier to try to invent narratives to explain small sample sizes away, though.

Do you just not understand the greater implications of what you've just posted about how small the margin of victory was?

What I'll always remember about the Toronto PyThags was their celebrations after hits. Tulo doubles, stares back at dugout, goes berserk with head contortions and the old eating-the-soup motion. He looked like a bad ass regardless of what the scoreboard said.

I do understand.

You are saying that the margin of victory is so small underdogs or teams that are not the better team should win more.

And I am saying the better team over the course of a best of 7 or 5 always comes out on top, no matter how close an individual game in that series may be. I may be in full agreement with you if it was single elimination, or even a best of 3.

But it isn't.

Dude, you don't get to troll me over the Royals/Jays when I had a higher opinion of your own team than you did.

Except that's completely ridiculous, of course. The Royals got swept by the White Sox this year while the Jays got swept by the Phillies. If the best team always won a 5 game series in baseball, such outcomes would never occur. And yet they occur all the time. I wonder why?!

Playoffs, not reg season. Everything I have said has been directed toward playoff time.

You aren't arguing the same thing. You are defining the better team as whoever would win the series more often if it was played a million times. He's defining the better team as whoever wins the series.

You have to add some qualifiers to make it work, but he can say "the better team on those particular nights is whoever wins the series". The Phillies had the worst record this season, but they were better than the Cardinals on two days.

So worse teams can win series in the regular season (and you freely admit that), but they can't do it in the playoffs. I shouldn't have to explain how that doesn't any sense at all.

Exactly, a worse team can be better for three or four games than a better team. It happens all the time every week in the sport and it doesn't make those weaker teams "better" than their opposition overall. That's the point.
