OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - Police say an employee with the COPS television show was shot Tuesday night while working on the show that is filiming in Omaha.

Police responded to the Wendy's at 43rd and Dodge around 9:20 Tuesday night for an armed robbery call. Deputy Chief Dave Baker said shots were fired. He said the suspect died. The COPS employee was taken to Nebraska Medical Center.

We do not know who shot the suspect or who shot the COPS employee. We also do not know what condition the COPS employee is in.

Well, yeah, it does look bad. We don't know the whole story. Maybe the TV guy was moving in where he really shouldn't have been. That's a reasonable possibility. Maybe the Airsoft looked very realistic. The guy was using it to hold up a place so that's a reasonable possibility as well. It does look bad though because two guys are dead and the police were the only ones armed.

Now that the press conference is over, here's a little of what was said:

1) The police entered from the east and west entrances. the Perp was at the counter with his gun.

2) He turns his gun to the officers and fires twice. Three witnesses will testify that the gun had a recoiling slide and appeared to be a real firearm, but it turned out to be an air soft gun.

3) the officers returned fire. The COPS guy was stuck in the vestibule on the east side, and was struck inside of it. He was wearing a vest, but the round entered at his armpit and thereby missed the vest. (unreal).

4) the perp was shot multiple times but was able to stumble out of the store where he collapsed in the parking lot. he was cuffed and both he and the COPS guy were taken to the hospital. Perp was pronounced dead last night, COPS guy today.

There will be no video released, but they did release some still shots from the video. Chief states that based on what he saw in the video, the cops acted properly and the situation was extremely dangerous.

Man, the Chief is saying how broken up the department is over this. They said that these guys are considered one of their own, they become very close to the officers that they ride along with. I guess you'd expect that, but whenever I've watched Cops, I guess you never think of the crews behind the camera.
