He is a good player, but the truth is we could probably replace his role on this team with a much cheaper player.

The only way I see him getting a big money extension is for him to PROVE he can be effective in coverage and be a ball hawking playmaker.

I highly doubt they pay him big money to keep being a glorified linebacker.
Berry has the versatility to do more than that. He wasn't bad in coverage last year. For some reason, he just wasn't good in the playoff game against the Colts. But most importantly, the kid is 25 and played a completely different defense. One of the advantages of him playing in the box is that he helps quarterback the defense. I think he's smart and dedicated, and he's only going to improve his leadership.

It goes past those 3, too. If we want to be honest about the situation.

I mean we all like Bowe and Colquitt, but for 15 million a year between them?

Sorry, but I'd rather just draft a punter in the 6th for dirt cheap and for that 15 million get Desean Jackson, Chris Clemons and another starting caliber player.

Oh well.

He absolutely wouldn't not at this point.

If he shows he can play the single high safety at that level, maybe.

It was. I thought he was extremely effective with the scrap stuff, including lower picks in the draft. Which is why I'm fine with the approach they're taking this year. He seems much more comfortable and in control, even if that means firmly saying "no."

There's no absolutely NO WAY Eric Berry is as valuable as Jairus Byrd.

He's a solid role player and a standout on a defense with only three players who are more outstanding at their positions than he is at his. Berry had 1 more INT than a broken-down and old Troy Polamalu and was credited with fewer forced fumbles. Hell, the safety opposite Jairus Byrd generated more turnovers. Heck, ED REED had the same number of INTs last season as Berry did last season and he was on two teams!

Any team that signs EB to a big contract is either paying him to play the same role in KC or on the sole potential of him being being the next Ed Reed circa 2006-2008.

He also has only played 3 seasons, 1 of which was coming off an acl tear so that's a little unfair

Exactly.

A safeties job (if he is to earn the mega bucks) is to limit big plays and take the ball away.

I'm sorry, but to this point Berry has displayed the ability to do neither consistently.

Source: LAPD confirms Jackson's gang ties to 49ers, Raiders
April 1, 2014, 12:30 pm

The San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders both reached out to the Los Angeles Police Department to confirm reports of DeSean Jackson's continued involvement with alleged members of Los Angeles street gangs; LAPD confirmed the reports, CSNBayArea.com has learned.

Last week, NJ.com reported that the Philadelphia Eagles were averse to retaining DeSean Jackson due to his off-the-field affiliations and the mercurial six-year veteran was released shortly after the article was published.
