VOLUNTEER IN PERSON - Volunteer efforts are being coordinated through Missouri Southern State University.
Many people have contacted the City of Joplin to volunteer assistance to the victims of the storm. ALL citizen volunteers should report to the Recreation Center at Missouri Southern State University. Volunteers’ services are appreciated, but to be effective, will need to be coordinated through this centralized location. Citizens are reminded that the American Red Cross, in cooperation with the City, has set up a shelter at Missouri Southern State University in the Leggett & Platt Center.

A blood drive will be held 2-6 pm at Achieve Balance Chiropractic in Columbia at 3901 S. Providence. If you are wanting to help Joplin, this is a great way to do it.

United Way of the Ozarks in Springfield is waiting to hear plans from the American Red Cross – Greater Ozarks Chapter regarding mobilizing volunteer efforts. As soon as it has confirmation on how and where to volunteer, it will release that information.

Emergency blood drive this afternoon - Monday 5/23

The Greater Kansas City chapter of the American Red Cross will hold an emergency blood drive this afternoon to provide blood for those injured in the tornados over the weekend.

The blood drive will be from 2 to 7 p.m. in the Cass County Room at 211 W. Armour Blvd.

Meanwhile, the Community Blood Center is requesting area residents to donate blood this week to help support the rescue efforts in Joplin.

The blood bank has shipped 15 units of blood to the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks. Local hospitals are performing surgeries on some of the victims and the need for blood will increase as the rescue efforts continue.

Chiefs to hold bottled water drive at Arrowhead - Tuesday 5/24 and Wednesday 5/25

In response to the tragic tornadoes that touched down in Joplin, Mo. and Reading, Kan. this weekend, the Kansas City Chiefs will contribute $35,000 to disaster-relief efforts. Additionally, they and their media partners are teaming with the Salvation Army – Midland Division to hold a bottled-water drive at Arrowhead Stadium for individuals in Kansas City to assist victims in the tornado-ravaged areas. The Chiefs will also be accepting financial donations for Heart-to-Heart International.

Bottled-water donations will be accepted in Lot C on the east side of Arrowhead Stadium Tuesday from noon until 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Those wishing to provide donations of bottled water may use any entrance to the stadium and may learn more from Chiefs broadcast partners KCTV5, 101 The Fox KCFX and Sports Radio 810 WHB, who have joined the Chiefs in supporting this important effort.

Springfield school district fundraiser and donation drive:

Springfield Public Schools students are finding ways to raise money and collect supplies to assist local charities with relief efforts for families in Joplin who were affected by the May 22 tornado. A Joplin school nurse has shared with SPS staff that there is an urgent need for water, toothbrushes, toothpaste and food.

JOPLIN, Mo. — Representatives from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) embassy in Washington, D.C., announced an initial donation of $500,000 to provide MacBook laptops for every Joplin high school student. The announcement was made today at Joplin High School’s temporary 11th and 12th-grade campus at Northpark Mall.

In addition to the initial $500,000 donation, “One-to-One” laptop donations will be matched up to an additional $500,000 for a total of $1 million to be contributed by the embassy.

The One-to-One initiative allows every high school student to have a laptop and continuous curriculum as Joplin students transition to temporary schools and eventually permanent schools. The laptops will help integrate cooperative learning in the classroom through software programs and to replace traditional textbooks.

Dana Al Marashi, head of the Heritage and Social Affairs Department for the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, made the announcement.

“When we saw the devastation that took place, the ambassador (of the UAE) decided that we needed to do something as a country,” Al Marashi said. “He reached out to Joplin to figure out what we needed to do as far as contributing we got in touch with the Joplin public schools in terms of helping with the One-to-One initiative.

Al Marashi said one of her colleagues came to Joplin 10 days after the tornado hit and spoke with members of Joplin Public Schools at that time.

The UAE is located in the Arabian Gulf and is the U.S.’ largest export market in the Arab world, according to the UAE embassy. The capital is Abu Dhabi.

Here's an update on construction. I talked to a guy in the temporary Home Depot building a few weeks ago. He said they were targeting mid November for opening the new store. I asked if it was going to be identical to the old store, and he said it was almost the same, except for one thing.... it has a safe room.

I kinda like the new location of St. John's Med Center. It's pretty darn close to my neighborhood.

JOPLIN, Mo. — Ken Martin has a front-row seat for the Joplin rebound.

“We can see things moving forward every day,” said Martin, president of Great Plains Federal Credit Union, 2306 S. Range Line Road. “To me it is unbelievable it has moved this fast. I just didn’t see how that would happen.”

Walgreens will reopen two stores in Joplin on Monday — three months to the day since the tornado hit — including a record-breaker at 20th Street and Range Line Road that was built from the ground up.

AT&T just opened a 5,000-square-foot retail store at 2336 S. Range Line Road, near the credit union.

Chick-fil-A has announced plans to reopen in its same Range Line location on Sept. 1.

Home Depot and the Wal-Mart store on Range Line have walls up.

The list goes on.

ECONOMIC BOOM

Alden Buerge, chairman and chief executive officer of First State Bank in Joplin, said the city is on the front edge of an economic boom that will last for years.

“Courtesy of the insurance industry,” he added.

The city of Joplin recently released its list of June building permits. Hundreds of permits were filed, many valued in the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars for electrical service, or repairs to homes and businesses after the May 22 tornado.

The value of all those permits in June came to nearly $27.2 million, which means Joplin saw in June more than twice as much construction activity as it saw in the first six months of the city’s fiscal year combined. The value of all construction in the city came to $13.4 million for those first six months. Joplin’s fiscal year runs from Nov. 1 through Oct. 31.

Construction in Joplin has been sluggish since the recession began several years ago, and multimillion-dollar permits filed with the city for private-sector projects have been scarce. In recent weeks, several such permits have been filed.

Chick-fil-A filed a building permit for just under $1 million. Some doctors filed seven-figure permits for new offices. Walgreens filed permits for $1.8 million to repair its Main Street store and for $2 million to rebuild the Range Line Road store.

Great Plains Federal Credit Union filed a $3.2 million permit in June to repair its building at 2306 S. Range Line Road.

“They are about 50 percent of the way to completion,” said Martin. “We probably have another month and a half before we are back in.”

The building sustained water damage after the air conditioning units and roof were damaged by the tornado. The credit union has been operating out of a temporary modular unit on the site.

New record

Few businesses are rebounding faster than Walgreens.

“Joplin is a new record,” said Dan Garneau, project architect, referring to the 15,000-square-foot store the company built from the ground up at 20th Street and Range Line Road.

The work was done in 83 days; the previous record for the company was 100 days. The company has more than 7,700 stores in all 50 states.

“It is the fastest we have ever built a store in the history of the company,” Garneau said.

“At one point we had 25 masons out there, and they were working every side of the building,” added Mike Flinchum, senior regional construction manager for the company. “It was 10-hour shifts, and toward the end, it was 12-hour shifts.”

Not only will Walgreens mark the grand opening Monday of its store on Range Line Road, but it also will hold a grand opening for the store at 20th and Main streets that had to be repaired.

‘Bidding is starting’

Chuck Killinger, too, is encouraged. He is president of Dalton-Killinger Construction Co. in Joplin, which specializes in public buildings such as schools and hospitals.

“I think there is a lot of design going on right now,” he said. “The bidding is starting.”

The Joplin School District sustained an estimated $150 million in losses, including multiple buildings that were destroyed. St. John’s Regional Medical Center also was destroyed; just this week, it announced that it will rebuild near Hearnes Boulevard and Interstate 44, and that total costs will be just shy of $1 billion.

“I think it is going to be a good time for construction. It is going to be great in terms of helping get our community on its feet, both for the people in the industry and for the people who benefit from it,” Killinger said, referring to restaurant owners and others.

Mike Landis, with Landis Construction, is a Joplin homebuilder who sees plenty of work ahead for years to come.

“We haven’t seen it this busy in six or seven years, at least,” he said Thursday.

“I foresee this for three, five, seven years. There are a lot of homes to rebuild, and businesses. This is not something that is going to happen overnight.”

“It’s going to be big,” said Buerge, with First State Bank.

Heard this from the mother of a JHS student: Yesterday a couple dozen girls were pulled out of class because their shorts were too short and school admins tried to get parents to bring them clothes in the middle of the day. Which obviously wasn't freaking likely. If I heard correctly they weren't regulating anything else, just shorts.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there better things to deal with on the second day of classes then dress code?

If you search google maps for Joplin, they have updated the satellite view, that includes all of the tornado damage. Looks like it may have been taken 2-3 weeks after the tornado.
