I want to find the sound byte from Colin Cowherd where Sam Cosell came on and said Alex Smith is asked to do the least of any NFL quarterback and that Russel Wilson is second. It was from mid November iirc.

So I guess QBs don't mean anything ... since Alex has been QB of winning teams 5 years in a row and Russell has been to two straight championships and has a sterling career winning percentage.

Apparently franchise QBs don't mean shit. When was the last time Drew Brees did anything?

You're missing the point...

When he had a defense that could force turnovers.

Unfortunately, he's on a very poorly ran team.

There is no question the strength of the team around Alex and Russel has helped them win games just as much as their own abilities.

Which gets back to my original point regarding an eventual sea change at the QB position.

Yes, QBs absolutely matter, but you either need HoF caliber guys or just simple base competency. There's no sense in paying 80% of a HoF quarterback 80% of what the HoF quarterback makes, IMO. There's no competitive advantage there. Instead, if you presume base competency is say 2/3 of a HoF quarterback, you should simply keep drafting guys and turning them over to have that while building up the rest of the team around them.

It's a baseball mindset applied to football. You don't pay through the nose for James Shields when Ventura can replace him and you can fill the hole in the rotation with a more cost effective option, ideally one with team control. It's why the Cardinals will let Lynn walk in FA, IMO - they'll have someone like Reyes or Kaminsky coming behind him. It's why they let Lohse walk, they had Lynn to replace him.

Now with Wainwright they paid to keep him because he was routinely a top 3 CY finisher - he was pitching at a HoF level so they paid to retain him.

Sooner or later it becomes the high price of mediocrity that kills. The Chiefs had suck a barren QB cupboard when the new regime arrived that the 'cycle QBs' option wasn't available to them, but I do believe they intend to do exactly that when Smith's bigger numbers come due - they'll try to replace him with a far cheaper Murray. I suspect next year they'll move on from Daniel and Bray and bring in another possible 'next man up' behind Murray.

That's why teams like Indianpolis, Minnesota and Miami have a chance to be serious contenders over the next decade if they play their cards right.

Luck is going to get paid a fortune, but is worth every penny. He has carried his team, and will continue to do so.

Yeah, the Dolphins paid for Tannehill, but they paid for a young QB with serious talent who has improved every year with nothing around him. They are in a great spot going forward, IMO.

Minnesota is in the infancy of the same situation as Miami.

Drafting well and keeping those young QBs in the pipeline is the way to the next dynasty. No problem paying a guy who can carry your team.

Paying guys like Smith, Cutler and Dalton like that is a recipe for disaster.

EVERY QB is a "system" QB.

Hell, Smith is in the perfect system for him, and he still can't pop a boner.

Today, Hootie and I agree:

Most of the time, it just is what it is.

No, I stated that it doesn't take a 4,500 yard, 30 TD season to win a Super Bowl.

Aikman and Wilson are perfect examples and like Wilson, Aikman is and was egregiously overrated.
