Garrett Grayson - QB from Colo. State

Thinking this guy might be a good developmental QB. Don't know how early they'll draft somebody, but I feel like I've started hearing this guy's name come up a lot more recently. Wonder if he fits the bill for Andy's system?

Production 2

2011 (4/3): 43-77-55.8-542-2-6
2012 (6/5): 78-138-56.5-946-7-3
2013 (14/14): 297-478-62.1-3,696-23-11
2014 (13/13): 270-420-64.3-4,006-32-7

Height-Weight-Speed 3

Average height for QB prospect with somewhat lean frame. Has big hands. Clocked in at a 4.72 40-yard dash on his pro day which is above-average.

Durability 3

Will need to improve bulk in order to hold up physically in NFL. Was a medical exclusion (right hamstring) at NFL Combine. Started all 27 games during final two seasons at CSU, but suffered a bruised throwing shoulder at Boston College in 2014 and it limited him for several weeks. In 2012, suffered a broken collarbone at Air Force (Sept. 29, and returned to action on Nov. 3 vs. Wyoming).

Intangibles 2

A grayshirt that enrolled in January 2011 and began practice with the Rams in the spring. Has matured during years at CSU. Developed into good leader. Well liked and respected. Good work ethic. Steady, even-keeled temperament. Coachable. Takes responsibility for mistakes. Showed a lot of toughness playing through shoulder injury in come-from-behind victory at Boston College in 2014. Son of Jody and Brad Grayson. Has an older sister. Uncle, Danny Grayson, was All-American LB at Washington State and was drafted in 7th round by the Steelers in 1990. Majored in communication studies. Involved in community service.

Quarterback Specific Traits

Mental Makeup 3

Played in a CSU offense with a lot of screens and quick hitters with half-field reads. But also was asked to go through full-field progressions on many throws, and he shows above-average field vision. Eyes could be a bit faster at times but he once he locates the open target he has a quick trigger. Love his mental and physical toughness on the field. Has confidence in his arm. Makes a lot of borderline dangerous decisions, which he will have to reign in a bit, but there's a lot to like about his aggressive temperment. Had a 3-to-1 TD-to-INT ratio during final two seasons as fulltime starter, which is solid but you'd like it to be a bit higher (coming from quarterback-friendly system and versus mostly mid-level competition). Stares down primary target and gives DBs too many chances to jump routes. Not enough urgency at top of drop and is inconsistent with anticipation. Will need to get the ball out quicker on a more consistent basis in the NFL.Doesn't take a lot of pride in ball fakes.

Accuracy 2

Good lower-body mechanics as a passer. Has a solid base, usually keeps his feet tied to his eyes so he's in a loaded position when ready to pull the trigger. Drives off back foot, gets good weight transfer and usually steps to and follows through to the target. Proven over time that he can place the ball accurately anywhere on the field. In fact, he connects on a high percentage of high-degree-of-difficulty throws with defenders in his face and almost no room to operate. He shows touch to drop the ball in the bucket on deep rail shots. Frequently makes accurate throws when working off-platform. However, the frustrating part of his game is the volume of misses despite generally good mechanics he has on elementary level throws. Sometimes it's a result of getting nonchalant with footwork and other times there appears to be no rhyme or reason. Based off our study of eight games in 2014, he tends to miss more on out breaking routes to his left than any other throw. Will miss within the strike zone on a lot of underneath throws, which robs his receivers of yards-after-catch. Also has just decent accuracy when throwing on the run. Much more accurate off-platform when he's able to reset his feet.

Release/Arm Strength 3

Little bit of a wind up delivery. Brings it down the back chute and around. While it's not compact, he does have a smooth and quick delivery. Very big hands for frame and has great control of the ball on pump fakes. Ball jumps off his hand. Overall arm strength is above average but not elite.Adequate arm power but maximizes his arm strength with proper lower-body synchronization.

Pocket Mobility 2

One of his best traits is his ability to buy just enough extra time in tight spaces to get the ball off to a late flashing target. Outstanding poise in pocket. Doesn't get rattled. Keeps eyes down and feels pressure naturally. Will stare down gun-barrell and take a big shot in order to deliver the ball. Shows adequate mobility to extend plays, but better at sliding/climbing within pocket. Pedestrian speed and elusiveness as a runner, but has enough vision, competitiveness and athleticism to occasionally tuck the ball and run for a first down.
