The Other Centers

It's pretty clear that EVEN IF the Chiefs pass up on Erving, they will need to acquire a center in this draft. We can't head into the season with just Kush.

The Crown Jewels in this thread are obviously Erving and Grasu.

Who else do YOU like for Kansas City, and in what rounds?

I'd want to see a guy actually play center in a game before expecting him to contribute there. Snapping the ball is only a small part of what makes the center position different than any other spot in the line. JMO.

you may want to watch this video with Chris Ballard

He says that Dorsey and Reid both have the philosophy of building the team upfront. Being strong upfront which is what they are in the process of doing.

I think the team wants to get bigger and stronger on the line. we should evaluate prospects with that in mind.

Quite a few guards get moved inside to center when they come to the NFL. Its not something that is "rare" by any means. Shorter right guard types with shorter arms that can snap a football are often the type.

John Miller, Louisville or Shaq Mason, Georgia Tech.

I think both would be balls at the C spot at the next level. Both anchor extremely well and play with exceptional functional strength.

Miller bends well, comes up fast and hard and uses his hands like meat cleavers on dudes. Amazing fundamentals and plays very smart. Is very good on pulls and absolutely locks onto dudes. I think he's the best interior lineman in this draft and has all the tools to slide over into the center position.

Mason, like Miller, plays with incredible strength and just gets after dudes. Comes up fast and holds his position against guys who are much bigger than him well. Redirects DL well with fast, strong hands.

Either would be ideal.

Center Rankings and where they might be drafted
1 Cameron Erving - very late 1st to early 2nd round
2 Hroniss Grasu - 2nd round
3 Reese Dismukes - late 2nd round to early 3rd
4 B.J. Finney – late 3rd round to early 4th
5 Andy Gallik - 4th round

Three game videos where you can see these guys playing from this past season.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l6J7UVGnlM - Auburn VS Kansas State 2014 - You can watch Finney and Dismukes. Finney moves out to tackle later in the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fAswo1rkjQ Florida State VS Oregon in Rose Bowl
Hroniss was just coming back from being injured but played pretty well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u150Vta1W2o Boston College VS Clemson – Andy Gallik #59 Boston College

I like John Miller as a center prospect too but it usually takes some time to become good. Hudson started one game his first season and then was injured for his second season. KC needs a player that can come in and play center pretty quickly incase Eric Kush is injured or maybe struggles as a starter.

I like Erving but I hate to give up our 1st round pick to get him. If Grasu or Dismukes are available to KC in the 3rd, they should draft them. I think B.J. Finney with our 3rd round comp pick might also be a possibility or Gallik with our 4th round pick.

For that reason, they should sign a tomato can in free agency. Unless you're Alex Mack, there's not many rookies who come right in and play at a high level. They still need to draft a guy who will be able to be a starting RG and backup center.

Max Garcia in the 3rd round would be a great pick.
