Let Sneed's agent test the market. The agent comes back with 4 years at $18 M, Veach says sure we'll match that, would you like to stay? Sneed says sure let's run it back.

Or if the agent comes back with something insane, Veach says "Ok let's see what they're willing to trade." And if it's not good enough, you still have Sneed play it out on the tag.

I still think he signs with us long term.
I could see Sneed getting $25 from someone. With the cap finally taking the big jump this year it's a lot easier.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I'd say it is, but we haven't reached that bridge to jump off it just yet.

Sneeds agents will put together their parameters for a fair deal. The Chiefs will decide if they want to accept. If not, the agents will look to find a team that will and put the Chiefs in touch with them where they'll talk trade compensation and if the trade works out - done and done.

That's the easy path(s).

Then if somewhere between cup and lip, it all falls apart, we have the tag/play scenario. And let's face it, Sneed WILL play. He's not going to sit out and miss $1.1 million/wk in game checks when he's made something like $4 million in his entire career.

It may ultimately take some arm twisting but I think the 3rd scenario is pretty unlikely if for no other reason than I think Sneed will eventually relent (either with the Chiefs or a trading team) and get a deal done that may not be exactly what he'd hoped for.

He knows that this is the year for a LTC.

Exactly.

We'll call this the Rosenhaus model.

It's how pros handle themselves.

$25Mx4 might be a little rich. What would they be willing to trade though, and would it be worth it to lose a year of Sneed when you're trying to 3-peat?

I wouldn't trade Sneed for anything less than a late round first or a proven WR personally. If it's a mid-round 2nd, I'd rather just have one more year of Sneed.

I'm not sure I see a team offering Sneed $4M more a year than the current top CB and be willing to spend a high draft pick.

I doubt we'd unload him for a bag of chips when we're trying to 3-peat.

I'd prefer to keep him as well. If it costs 27 to keep him - that's what it costs. We're looking at a 3 peat here. I honestly think we're in position to win the next 2 years so make this happen. Make a run. Go for 4.

Even if we blow our cap up and cut 50% of the team Mahomes is still making the playoffs. There's no such thing as bottoming out with Pat...

Source: Chiefs prep tag for L'Jarius Sneed, open to trade

Source: Chiefs prep tag for L'Jarius Sneed, open to trade

The Kansas City Chiefs have informed L'Jarius Sneed they are prepared to use the franchise tag and are open to consummating a trade if no long-term deal is reached, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Tuesday.

Sneed is agreeable to the scenario, which gives him a chance to talk with other teams while the Chiefs remain in play for his services for the 2024 season. Pending league approval, a new contract for Sneed, a free agent, could be worked out as part of a trade to kick in at the start of the new league year. The source stressed that a trade is very much on the table.

The Chiefs are expected to use the nonexclusive franchise tag, which would cost about $19 million for the 2024 season.

Earlier Tuesday, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach had said at the scouting combine in Indianapolis that he was prepared to use the franchise tag on Sneed or defensive tackle Chris Jones if the team can't get them both re-signed by the start of free agency next month.

In 2023, Sneed had by many measures his best season since he joined the Chiefs as a fourth-round draft pick in 2020. Sneed covered the opponents' top receiver on at least 65% of the snaps a league-high seven times during the regular season, according to NFL Next Gen Stats data.

Only once was any of those receivers able to catch more than two passes. Davante Adams of the Las Vegas Raiders had five catches for 73 yards on seven targets against Sneed in a Week 12 game.

Sneed, 27, didn't allow a touchdown catch as the nearest defender in coverage all season until the Chiefs' divisional round playoff win over the Buffalo Bills.

In the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens, Sneed lined up against Zay Flowers 21 times. Sneed allowed one catch for 54 yards, but later in the game made one of the biggest plays of the game by knocking the ball from Flowers just before he crossed the goal line. The Chiefs recovered the fumble in the end zone.

In 57 regular-season games, Sneed has 10 interceptions and 40 passes defended. He has one interception and seven passes defended in 13 postseason games.

Sneed is a great player and I'd be good if he stayed. However, he did give up TDs vs both the Bills in the Divisional Round and the Niners in the SB.

You have him at $43.5 million over the next two years on the tag. Probably his best 2 years, at that.

I don't think he's getting $25 million/season unless there's some fake money at the back end of it. 3 years, $65 million seems to be a probable outer bound to me. Maybe some fake years/dollars on the back end and probably something like 2/$40 million in effective guarantees at signing.

Fair enough, I wasn't entirely sure about the postseason

But like I was saying, he's just now reaching his peak while Jones will start fading sooner than later

Don’t kill the messenger here as I thought this was ridiculous, but Verderame said on the AA podcast last week that he had spoken with some NFL people from other teams who thought Sneed would get something like 15-16mm/yr (I think he said the range was 13-18mm).

I thought this was absurd and the fact that he’s getting tagged would seem to vouch for that. I would happily take 3 years of Sneed in that range and think he probably does settle in that 20-22mm AAV range.

I’m fine with tag and trade. I’m fine if he plays on the tag this year. Win-win assuming he doesn’t sit out.
