The 2017 campaign sure has been a rocky one for the Raiders. Their Super Bowl aspirations quickly died away.

To make matters worse, off-the-field disturbances are stealing the headlines today.

Oakland Raiders backup cornerback Sean Smith is facing serious charges that could send him to jail and ultimately end his NFL career.

Smith was involved in an incident on July 4 this year when he allegedly brutally assaulted the then-boyfriend of his sister, Christopher Woods.

Smith allegedly stomped the head of the Woods on a curb, leaving him unconscious and forcing him to undergo surgeries to repair his face and eye sockets. Woods could also face permanent injuries because of it.

Two witnesses testified to the incident and according to reports, Smith could face up to seven years in prison if found guilty.

The nine-year veteran spent time with the Dolphins and Chiefs before joining the Raiders last season. He's started 21 games over his two years in Oakland, totaling 68 tackles and four interceptions.

With a loss on Sunday to the Cowboys, the Raiders are just about knocked out of playoff contention and could be in danger of losing Smith permanently.

If these disturbing allegations are true, there's no question Smith deserves to be punished for his actions.

He will stand trial in early January and the Raiders will have a much better idea of the situation come next year.

This article is a new one posted on 12-20-17 by Joe Schiller. I am not sure about an earlier one. This one has new information about the actual testimony.

I guess anythings possible depending on the institution, but a high profile pro athlete like him is more likely to be a hero of sorts, and get special considerations IMO

To be fair, when you are curb stomping someone your intent is for them to never get up again.

You don't curbstomp someone just trying to rough em up a bit.

With the amount of Raiders fans populating prisons, he’ll be fine when he gets sent to the big house. He’s also used to being around convicts since he’s played for the Raiders for a few seasons now.

Sean must have a special relationship with his sister to warrant this type of protection. Need more details and specifics on that.

Who really knows if his intentions were to kill him or not? But one thing is for certain, he wanted to **** him up BAD!

This is clearly impulsive behaviour without even realizing the legal consequences behind that particular action.
