No, you're not a person who enjoys beating kids. In this thread we've had parents here chime in about spanking their kids as a swat on the bottom with the hand. It's concerning that you're being cool with "thin switch" beatings as discipline, though, just because you turned out fine.

You're also right about this type of discipline environment being the standard for numerous cultures in this country and around the world. That's absolutely the case, but in each case, we're talking about causing harm to a child, and the rationale for it is, "My parents did it, so that's what I know."

You made the choice to not beat your daughter. Why? It wasn't just because she didn't do shit that deserved it, either. Your daughter has never disobeyed you or gotten into trouble for shit? You probably did some of the same stuff that your daughter did that got you the switch. Why did you say, "I don't need to do what my parents did to me here"?

My daughter got into trouble but she was never belligerent. She didn't do half the shit I did as a kid and was a much easier child to deal with I am sure.

My dad went too far with me at times, I have no doubt. But his intent was not evil or ill intended. He probably toned it down a tad from my grandfather etc...who is also my most admired person in the world.

I understand times are different than they were when we grew up or our fathers or grandfathers but really, it doesn't appear to be a better world as far as personal responsibility etc....go.

Resorting to violence generally means you've lost complete control of a situation. So if you resort to beating your kids as a parenting tool, chances are you had no business being a parent in the first place.

I have no idea, you may be correct. It seems he has a lot of kids with different women which would,lead to the answer being no.

That being said this one incident is not what causes me to think that. Fact is I think he did exactly what was done to him. No more no less.

The state of the world compared to the good ol' times does not have a direct correlation with the reduction of abuse. This isn't a "spare the rod spoil the child" thing. I personally don't feel like harkening back to a time when it was considered responsible parenting to literally beat the shit out of your child, I don't care how good of a person your grandad turned into.

Sadly this is going to be the dialogue across the country, completely ignoring the fact that this is NOT GETTING SPANKED this is whipping a child until he bleeds.

I believe in spanking a child but the mental stress it causes doesn't even directly link to actual pain. The lesson is learned without actual physical damage. There is zero positive result by elevating a simple spanking to actual abuse.

The beating allegedly resulted in numerous injuries to the child, including cuts and bruises to the child’s back, buttocks, ankles, legs and scrotum, along with defensive wounds to the child’s hands.

"He added that Peterson put leaves in his mouth when he was being hit with the switch while his pants were down. The child told his mother that Peterson “likes belts and switches” and “has a whooping room."

"According to police reports, the child, however, had a slightly different story, telling authorities that “Daddy Peterson hit me on my face.” The child also expressed worry that Peterson would punch him in the face if the child reported the incident to authorities. He also said that he had been hit by a belt and that “there are a lot of belts in Daddy’s closet.”

"Peterson also allegedly said via text message to the child’s mother that he “felt bad after the fact when I notice the switch was wrapping around hitting I (sic) thigh” and also acknowledged the injury to the child’s scrotum in a text message, saying, “Got him in nuts once I noticed. But I felt so bad, n I’m all tearing that butt up when needed! I start putting them in timeout. N save the whooping for needed memories!”

"The “whooping” – as Peterson put it when interviewed by police – occurred in Spring, Texas, in May. Peterson’s son had pushed another one of Peterson’s children off of a motorbike video game. As punishment, Peterson grabbed a tree branch – which he consistently referred to as a “switch” – removed the leaves and struck the child repeatedly."

An adult that does this to a child, and in this case a 4-year-old child, should be behind bars and barred from being alone with children ever again.

I hope the NFL is now starting to take these situations seriously, which results in a permanent ban from the league.
