Right. A preseason game will tell us everything we need to know. Nevermind that fisher played average to close the season last year in actual regular season games.

But preseason is the best way to judge what a players got. Got it.

It's the best we've got to go on for people who aren't actually there to witness every practice. When I look at pre-season games, particularly concerning the OL, I focus on these things:

1. Execution and cohesion as a unit. Are they able to recognize and pick up blitzes effectively? Can they get out and form a decent wall in the screen game? Can they drive defenders off of the ball in the run game more often than not?

2. For the interior on basic pass protection, are the 3 players able to recognize and support each other in their attempt to keep the middle of the pocket from collapsing? Is the veteran (Jeff Allen) doing his job well enough for Hudson to focus more on helping out the rookie Fulton?

3. Individually, are our Tackles able to handle their 1 on 1 assignments? How good are their feet in moving to keep them in front of the outside pass rusher? Are they quick enough to force speed rushers outside and do they have the power to anchor against a bull rush? Are they winning their battles, or at least holding their own, at least 90% of the time (which is pretty much where my minimum cutoff is for a starting caliber OT)?

So far, I can say no to all of these things, which is terrible.

You know that your OL is complete shit when you're watching the game live and you can't tell which OL player ****ed up but there are 2+ guys in the backfield before your QB even reaches the top of his drop or before the RB has even had a chance to start running.

Sighs. This is why we cant have nice things.
Not really, Joeckel has had his own struggles as well, though not as bad as Fisher.

I haven't watched the game from tonight, but from week one, and week two, he had no struggles.

then again, playing against that Lions front 7, can do that to good players.

made joe Thomas look bad last year.

Smith does need to get rid of that hitch that he has but that just comes down to timing and comfort with a WR.

I am talking about people commenting on fishers performance in a meaningless preseason game last year and holding that up as more important than his improved performance at the end of last year.

Fisher has been terrible. It's also his second start at left tackle and it's only the preseason. We don't know what we have in him yet.

Yeah, I'm sure people are well aware of that. It's just safer to give him, and other players, shit so that if they end up playing pretty well then we are surprised and it feels much better. The other side is that, if they fail then people can feel satisfied about how right they were that "x" player was always a shit show and never going to be anything more than that.

You know this place well enough to know that's not true. Fisher is on the target list. The critics will point to 2 mistakes even if he plays otherwise well. The second half of the season, I would say he played passable. Hardly a ringing endorsement. Everyone else says he's a bust then points to a few bad plays a game.

I understand your frustration against the nihilist pessimism on this site.

But Eric Fisher has played like genuine ass for two preseason games now. And that is extremely alarming.

I'm probably an idiot but I am taking Reid's word for what it is. The guy didn't lift weights most for a long time following his surgery. Hopefully he's just behind a little. However, he is starting to worry me. I really don't want him to be a bad player but it's getting hard to deny.

He was the first overall pick in the draft. Passable isn't good enough.

Yeah, that was awful. The others weren't COMPLETELY abysmal though. He was, at least, able to buy enough time for a throw should one be made.

Our OL stinks and our secondary stinks. This season will produce another top ten pick. The defenses we face will kill our OL. Unfortunately our cap was fugged and nothing came to help. Dorsey did a poor job with our OL by just letting 3 walk out the door. He should kept two of them.
