Jaye Howard or Sean Smith

Which would you sign.

For the sake of argument, let's assume the following contracts (without getting into the details too much):

Sean Smith gets a 5 year, 52.5 million deal (10.5 per). First year cap hit is 6.6 m to fit cap constraints. Roughly on par with Byron Maxwell's deal (5th highest for a CB).

Jaye Howard gets a 4 year, 36 million deal (9.0 per). First year cap hit is 6.6 m to fit cap constraints. Roughly on par with Derek Wolfe's and Jurrell Casey's deals (6th and 7th highest for 3-4 DE).

I think most of us agree that's the choice the team will have to face.

I also agree with most of the board that the team will choose Howard. Assuming they can wrap him up -- failing to sign him during the season is giving me Rodney Hudson flashbacks.

I think he's going to want to hit FA and see what he can get. He may, however, come back and let the Chiefs match whatever he gets. Who knows though.

Howard since SMith will be too much. I'd realistically love to have Smith first

Who replaces Smith?...that is the most important question. This team set a franchise records for most points allowed during his absence. Once he came back...the streak began. Peters was the most targeted CB in the NFL for a reason.

Berry better give KC a sweetheart deal...they have already payed him $50 million for 4 1/2 seasons worth of play. He gave up the winning NE TD...got smoked.

Because they did right by him when he got cancer...and he's been grossly overpaid for the majority of his career. He was the highest paid Safety in history before ever taking a snap...and has missed 27 games. Had a cap hit of almost $12 million in 2014....which equaled nearly 2 million a game (6 games played).

I can't get these contracts to embed correctly....here's Derek Wolfes deal broken down.

Probably exactly what Howard wants.

Howard, and it's not even remotely close for me

Smith is very overrated, he's good not great, and replaceable

Howard over Devito was a sizable upgrade

I know everyone wants to talk about Smith replacing Gaines after his suspension, and how that made such a huge difference. It was pushing Fleming to the bench that made such a huge difference. We have many other pieces sutton put into play to keep fleming from hitting the field again. We can replace Smith just fine and for cheaper than his 10M per

You better hope so because our defense is complete dog shit without 2 corners that you can leave out on the edge all alone.

We end up with another Cooper or Fleming and our season is OVER. You willing to risk the entire season on that?

I feel like threatening Smith with the tag would give you a HUGE advantage in negotiations. If you let him play out the tag he is not going to receive a huge payday from anybody at the age of 30. If you have him tagged I would think you could get him cheaper than what he's looking for

The tag is $14 million.

The Chiefs can't afford that.

Wouldn't tagging Berry make more sense than Smith? I would be hesitant giving a lot of guaranteed money to someone that just had cancer.

KC has shit for depth at CB...If Smith rolls, it will cost a high pick to replace him...and you are probably not even breaking even. It creates a situation where you gave up a pick to become worse. I think drafting DJ's replacement is priority #1.

This team isn't rebuilding anymore.

If Smith leaves and Peters gets hurt....then what?

If you let Smith go there's a very real possibility that Fleming could see significant playing time again next season.
