Revisionist GM: would you have drafted Manual or Geno instead of trading for Smith?

All this 'hate on Alex' talk lately.

Well, what would you have done that would have made us better? Be honest

It's not revisionist, everyone here has said what they wanted done at that point.

I would have signed Matt Hasselbeck and drafted geno smith.

I would have drafted geno Smith.

Knowing what I know now, he's not the answer. I think he's Jay cutler with less arm strength.

Even knowing what I know now and not thinking he's the answer , I would have drafted him.

I would read 50 DeBerg threads a day before I traded for Smith.

Geno offered a higher upside and a lower floor. Both are better results than 6-10 wins because you can either reboot the franchise or contend.

I would have drafted him.

It's also hard to know how he would have turned out had he sat his first year, as almost all rookie QBs should. Colin Cowherd says it a lot, but it's true: what offensive player has Rex Ryan developed?

Regardless, it's unlikely he would have amounted to anything. His personality sucks.

I would've have drafted geno and set him up in an offense similar to the air raid he ran in college. Andy Reid's horizontal passing attack might have been perfect actually if they used it to open up the deep pass like he did at WV.
A lot of genos success was due to WR YAC, but he was extremely efficient at getting the ball to his playmakers until the secondary opened up for the deep balls.

I don't k ow what they attempted for him in NY, rarely got to watch the games.
I do know he obviously didn't make smart decisions with the football.

That's the hard part, we just don't know how they are behind closed doors.

Knowing what I know now trading for Alex Smith is the worse decision this franchise could have made. Geno and Manuel were cheap with upside that had contracts you could easily eat if things didn't work out. Alex on the other hand set the franchise back 5 years and they married themselves to mediocrity and wasted the careers of a lot of good players.

there's a lot of moving parts to this no?

assuming you never trade for Alex Smith, you get both 2nd round picks back

assuming you plan to take Geno 1st overall
do you pay Brandon Albert instead of Dwayne Bowe then? no Eric Fisher?

or do you take someone different 1st overall? (who? there is literally crap in the top 10.) I think they scouted Ezekiel Ansah, or the obvious picks Sheldon Richardson or Star Lotulelei . Every other player is as bad as fisher.

so you are basically looking at

1.1. Geno
2.1. Kiko Alonzo? Darius Slay? Zack Ertz?
3.1 Travis Kelce

or

1.1 Star? Ansah? Richardson
2.1 Geno
3.1 Kelce

would that make us a better team today? assuming you actually hit on that extra player? There are a lot of shitty players in the draft. The odds aren't good you are nailing it with that Alex Smith pick.

pending on what you did in the '13 draft though would affect the '14 draft and you may not have to take Dee Ford in the first.

our record would be a lot worse thanks to Geno Smith so we probably would be picking higher, and would absolutely be in play for one of those studs like Zach Martin, Aaron Donald, CJ Mosley, Odell Beckham, Anthony Barr, etc. You almost couldnt screw that pick up.

But assuming we pick in the same place we could go Teddy Bridgewater if you think Geno is a failure after 1 year or Derek Carr. If that's too unrealistic you could just keep it at Dee Ford or Dennard or Verret or Kelvin Benjamin and in our 2nd round pick nab Garrappalo, Jarvis Landry, Justin Britt, etc.

There are so many scenarios and possibilities to say this team would be upgraded with those 2 extra Alex Smith picks. And maybe even have nailed a star player in one of the two drafts cause of it.

But the dominoes would have fell completely different. Alex Smith directly affects drafting Fisher and then the rest is history, otherwise this might be a completely different team with a QB on a cheap rookie deal with tons of cap space to spend.

What would I have done differently? With the benefit of hindsight, it would be tough to beat this:

1) Sign or trade for a different stop gap QB (Kyle Orton, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Carson Palmer, Jason Campbell, Matt Moore, don't really care who)

2) Draft Sheldon Richardson at 1.1 in 2013. Draft Keenan Allen at 2.1 in 2013.

3) Re-sign Brandon Albert and Schwartz after 2013 season

4) Draft Teddy Bridgewater a 1.23 in 2014. Draft Gabe Jackson (yay, Sacc) at 2.23 in 2014.

5) Work out a big contract extension for Justin Houston BEFORE the 2014 season.

Would have been a better team in 2014 and be set up much better for the future. Oh, and you'd be positioned to actually use an early pick on a T in the upcoming 2015 draft without it being a ridiculous allocation of resources to one position group.
