Chiefs' defense is on its way to being historically bad

http://espn.go.com/blog/kansas-city-...storically-bad

CINCINNATI -- In an effort to figure out how historically bad this year’s Kansas City Chiefs defense is trending to be, I found something it has already done that defenses run by Greg Robinson and Romeo Crennel never did.

That alone makes it bad.

The Chiefs have allowed 30 or more points in three straight games within a season for the second time in franchise history. The other time was in 1987 but that one comes with a huge asterisk. The Chiefs used replacement players during the labor strike for two of those games.

The Chiefs have allowed 321 yards passing in each of their last two games. That’s an incredible stat considering they haven’t led during either game and the opponent didn’t have to throw. The Packers and Bengals just found it so easy they didn’t want to stop.

You could say the Chiefs were ripped the last two weeks by the two top-rated quarterbacks in the league, Aaron Rodgers and Andy Dalton. That’s true, but that’s still an unusual happening in Chiefs history. They’ve allowed 321-plus passing yards in three straight games twice and 321-plus in two straight games two other times.

But it’s the points where the Chiefs are truly embarrassing themselves. They are on a pace to allow exactly 500, which would blow away the franchise record of 440, set by the 2008 Chiefs.

That team, by the way, finished 2-14.

What is ridiculous is that you believe that Reid had nothing to do with Smith being in KC. Including not agreeing to give up picks to get him here...

Reid was hired before Dorsey, Reid asked to have Dorsey hired. I truly doubt that Reid would just let Dorsey start giving away draft picks without any input into the situation at all... Just silly talk JD1020.

Theres a ton of threads about how Alex sucks and is the sole reason the Chiefs cant win.

This is a legit thread for once and its already devolved into another Alex sucks thread.

Can anybody rationally discuss the problems with this team without getting emotional like a little baby.

Its because the Alex haters said the D was gonna be great and help him win despite himself setting themselves up to be right now matter what happened this season.

But oh no, the D has actually sucked more the the O and that's a fact - stats don't lie.

There are structural problems with the D this year but really it boils down to individual plays like some have mentioned.

I agree that Sutton needs to get more aggressive with the blitz, etc. but if a guy cant cover one on one it limits what the coordinator can do. And Dee Ford has been a huge disappointment but has he tried lining him up next to Houston or something creative to get this guy of the snide. Also, the lb unit still is non existent even with DJ or maybe despite his return.

Gonna need a ILB and another CB in next years draft of FA for sure.

I am not really sure how Sutton thinks he can win the battle by lining up in man, but giving the receivers a cushion and free release.

Rodgers and Dalton, along with Manning in the latter stage of that game when they chucked Kubiak's offense, were getting the ball out in 2 seconds or less consistently.

You can not hope to generate a pass rush if you don't disrupt timing.

It's a combination of many things.

-Sutton's dumbassery
-Not having our 3 best CB's on the field together
-Tamba slipping
-DJ slipping
-Dee Ford making no impact
-Poe being a bit overrated (especially vs the run)
-Muaga/Wilson not playing well
-Berry not being himself anymore

This team needs an infusion of talent at ILB as well as an enforcer at SS.

For years LB was the strength of the defense and team overall. I think that's changed. It's now DL. Jaye Howard might be our best defensive player so far this year. It's close between him and Houston.

I think that Derrick Johnson, while still an effective knifing player and great at avoiding blocks is a major liability in coverage because of how stiff his hips are.

I think he's been really overrated in coverage his whole career, mostly because he got a lot of int's on coverages that had him playing rotating zones.

we don't rotate enough defensively either. If you watch the Bengals they have two starting horses at DE but they rotate those guys and their defensive tackles non-stop.

Patriots are even rotating their O-line this season.

I dont think we rotate nearly enough on both sides of the ball, Maclin is left in the game when visibly fatigued

Product of the single-high in my opinion. Can't press everyone with pretty well no over-the-top coverage on the back end. I hate the concept, but its what Sutton trots out every week.

Do agree with others that its time to start giving Wilson and Ford some serious reps to see if they can hack it. Too many holes in the defense right now. Hali has really fallen off, DJ is downright awful looking at times this year. Poe was brought back too early.

As for the offense, Alex Smith isn't worth a **** and the offensive line is so bad it just makes him pathetic. Can't block for the game's most explosive running back. Just a shit show. Defense is on the field constantly with 3 and out after 3 and out.

I mean, where the hell does this team begin to fix the issues?

1. Sit Smith and start Murray.
2. Wilson starts over Mauga.
3. Nelson starts at NB.
4. Howard starts at NT. If Poe isn't 100% than IR him and let him sit. If he's on his way back....move him to DE. Bailey - Howard - Poe.

I said that Sutton needs to be fire. Not sure where I said that none of these guys have regressed. Feel free to go find that post though.

Howard has been pretty damn good at NT, so I don't disagree whatsoever with keeping him there and letting Poe heal up to 100%.

The Nelson situation baffles me. I mean to trot out Fleming and Cooper and watch that abhorrent debacle, then watch your nickle in Gaines go out to injury yet continue to not activate him... I can't understand it. That's on the coaching staff. Fleming and Cooper have proven they cannot play in this league. Cut ties and start picking up scraps, find one that can cover something. They had a kid in camp that looked decent, a rookie, I forget his name now but it wasn't Olatoye (might have been Penny).

Anyhow, they need to start making better player personnel decisions when things aren't working out.

This all changes THIS WEEK!

What these boys need is confidence and they will get a huge boost when they sack that pussy Cutler at least 5 times, get pressures and a pick six or two.

I don't even see Cutler finishing the game - they have no center, a practice squad player on his blind side and you know Cutler will have low blood sugar by the end of the first quarter!!!
