The Papillon remake took me by surprise
what do folks think about remaking the classic. It looks good in the trailer but seems just wrong.

It's going to be impossible to make it as good as Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. If you go into it as a completely new movie you will probably really like it. If you expect it to live up to the original, you're going to be let down

Someday I'll figure out how Charlie Hunnam keeps getting cast in movies.

He may have been great in Sons of Anarchy, but I haven't seen him in anything worth a shit since. He just isn't a very good actor. Malek is going to blow him off the screen to the point that it will be distracting.

I didn't watch SOA (hear that I should) but he'll just be Raleigh Beckett to me and while Pacific Rim was entertaining as hell, I'm pretty sure he didn't get put up for an Oscar for his performance...

He tried in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, but that movie was such a goat **** that even Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino in their primes couldn't have saved it.

That movie had a chance to be interesting.

Then they took out ****ing Merlin because there wasn't a female lead and they couldn't figure out how to fit one in. So suddenly they just made Merlin's role into 'Merlin's apprentice' and stuck a woman in there.

That should tell you how serious they took that movie. Disappointing really; Arthurian legend stuff can be a lot of fun and the world is so big they could've gone all over the map with it.

But I also won't give Hunnam as pass for it's suckage - he was not good at all. Jude Law chewing scenery was the only redeeming quality of that movie and even Law clearly hamming it up was more convincing than Hunnam - an ENGLISHMAN - sounding like an American trying to do an English accent.

Seriously, how does a guy born in Newcastle manage a bad English accent? It was just weird.

Agreed 100%. I really wanted that movie to be a good new take on the Arthur mythology, and it was the opposite of that.

The scene where Charlie says "take the piss" over and over just made my skin crawl for some reason. And like you said, he's a ****ing Brit and still made it sound awful, lol.

So it was bugging me enough to look it up.

Evidently he HAD a thick northern England accent (geordie) which sounds to me like one of those over the top chimney sweeps in a movie trying to be a Dickensian novel; mostly just some kind of combination of cockney and street urchin.

And since that accent is understandably awful, he took a bunch of classes and such when he got stateside to get rid of it. Then lived in America long enough that he just lost it outright.

So he takes on Arthur and what we tend to think of as an English accent is what we would call a more 'proper' sound - Southern England; basic stuff that you try to make it sound like when you're trying to sound posh (i.e.: not "hey govnah!"). So to mimic that accent, he had to get trained on a SOUTHERN England accent.

In the process, the Northern England creeped back in. So really, he does end up with this mash of taught Southern English, taught 'American' and rusty as hell, unnatural Northern English.

It's just absolutely awful.

Like I said - I'm not sure he's been worth a damn in anything I've ever seen. But at least his voice sounded closes to an actual human being that might exist on this planet in Pacific Rim. He does 'blue collar American' better than anything else he does at this point.

Off topic here, but hearing a woman speak with a hybrid southern English / Northern Great Plains accent is quite interesting.

HORRIBLE IDEA like the other 99.9% of remaking classics!

Hollywood getting real lazy and wants to take classics with young stars to draw in young audiences. I get the concept, just don't agree!

Hunnam was fine in the Lost City of Z. That move was great -- the rest of the cast put in better performances, but Hunnam did alright in that one.
