They didn't. He was at 67.6 fWAR despite a 90 wRC+ for his career. His defensive adjustment is 375.3, the best ever. Number two was Brooks Robinson.

Interestingly, David Ortiz rates as the 9th worst defensive player from cumulative defensive metrics ever, despite playing the vast majority of his career as a DH. That is some truly amazing butchery.

That's basically saying that his defense alone was worth 37.5 WAR over the course of his career. I'd say that's pretty fair. I think your argument would be better if focused on someone whose contributions aren't yet quantified as well, even with increasing focus on framing, and that's Yadi.

As much as it pains 2012 me to say, Pujols is probably number four. He had 28 more WAR than Boyer and 21 more than Ozzie and was the best player on two title teams and three pennant winners.

Plus, he netted us Michael Wacha.

Pujols had the best 11 years of baseball ever played by a position player in the history of baseball. It's tough to leave him off.

How can some of you guys forget about Hornsby? 2nd highest career BA in baseball. 3X BA >.400, 6 batting titles and so on

Stan the Man, Gibson, Hornsby are locks to me. Those 11 years are hard to overlook for the 4th spot. But I'd be good with Ozzie or Brock too.

A few more weeks. Regardless, if they continue to execute pitches this well, the team could run away with the division, even if the results aren't the same.

It's just an excellent pitching staff. Looking back, it's amazing that we once won 105 games with Carpenter, Morris, Woody Williams, Marquis, and Suppan as the staff.
