Take consolation that you have become a far better man than your father ever was. A real tribute to your mother.

Doesn't have to be him to celebrate or appreciate fathers day. Be a dad if you got kids and be the best dad you can be. That's what fathers day is or be a son/daughter that has someone you look up too to appreciate.

Dude, I grew up listening to my father verbally abusing my mother on a daily basis for crap that had nothing to do with her.
I would ask for him to go out and play only to be let down; he'd lay on the sofa and bitch at us ( I have 3 brothers) if I made the floor creak above him. I genuinely feared 3 pm because that was when he got home from work. Now that I have two step kids of my own, as a result of my step father, I know I would never do something like that to a child. Did it hurt? Hell yes. But am I going to let it dictate my life? Hell no! There are shitbags everywhere. Be who you want to be, and I hope your father dies with a rusty cock up his ass!

My story isn't quite as bad, but similar in that my dad was a deadbeat and my mom deserves all the credit for who me and my brothers have become. So yeah, Father's Day isn't particularly special for me either.

No, I really never wanted anything to do with him. My feeling is that he is nearing the end of his life and really doesn't want any money going to anyone but his current family. But, my mom nor I need any money from him.

My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet.
My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament.

My Dad drank a case of beer a day for as long as I can remember. Every single day. Christmas etc. He was verbally and physcially abusive. He told me twice in my life that I had did a good job with something. He was selfish and mean to my Mom. Thats just the short list that I learned on how NOT to be a Dad.

People are shitty. Unfortunately sometimes they share your genetics. But don't let it get in your head. My sister and I are axiomatically different. I really feel you couldn't recombine genetic material and get 2 more different results. So just because he's family doesn't mean you owe him shit. |

Well, since everybody else is sharing, I'll share as well. My father walked out on my mom shortly after I was born. He refused to claim me, yet claimed my sister who was born a year earlier. My mother worked three jobs to take care of us alone until I was about five. Then she met the man who stepped in and raised us like we were his own. Normally, most kids whose dad walks out on them feel cheated in life, but I actually feel like I received a privilege that kids with both of their original parents living together don't receive. I got to see the bad, I know what a bad father is, because I had one that abandoned me. On the flip side, I also got to see the great. I saw a man step in to raise my sister and I, add two more children to our family, and legally adopt me at the age of 12. He has flaws like any other man, but he's given me an example to look up to, that I wouldn't have had otherwise.
I don't often think of my original father, and I had zero emotion when he passed a few years back. In fact a lot of times I have to be reminded that he ever existed. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I have a wonderful Dad that has given me much more than the original ever would have even if he had stuck around. My dad has punished me, given me the traditional father/son moments, and has given me good life lessons throughout my childhood/adult years. And he did all of that by choice, that makes it seem even more special. |
