Best way to dig for a paver patio?

I'm in the process of digging out a 14x14' pit about six inches deep for a paver patio. While I can get the soil up with a spade, it is a mother****er. I thought about renting a sod cutter, but they only go a few inches deep, and from my understanding, once you've cut below the root level it doesn't come out in removable strips any more.

As I can't get a Bobcat into the back of a fenced yard, what would you do?

Well, it kind of morphed into an unexpected project because my wife decided that a small above ground pool (I think I'm not white trash, but my faith is slipping) would be a nice option for the kids. Her idea was to lay it down on the grass, which I felt was a slightly worse idea than a "Jump to Conclusions" mat.

As we had already had a shade under a ton of rubber mulch put down on Monday, I decided that if this is going to be done, the dogs will get nowhere near the mulch, play equipment, and/or nominal pool, and said pool will be on a stable surface that can serve multiple purposes when its not supernova hot outside.

Thus, my idea was to put in a paver patio that can serve as a secondary landing area with afternoon shade, the ability to hold a table and chairs in the spring and fall, and a small pool in the summer, split off from the rest of the yard with an ornamental fence.

Holy shit, you are very close to the white trash line.

Between doing your own slave labor and an above ground pool, you're only a "Honey, I've been working all day, let's head to Golden Corral for dinner" kind of comment from being 100%.

As I said, if anyone wants one of the multi-colored one, I'll send a sprout up that you can try and grow yourself. They grow in pots quite easily if you have cold winters and can't plant in the ground.

Also Hamas, three Mexicans and a white guy put in our paver patio that you can kind of see. Well worth the money.

FWIW, I had to do this very same thing several years back and was not looking forward to it. A friend of mine told me to just soak the crap out of the area that I was removing sod from and get it to the point of an overly swampy condition and he said I would be surprised at how much easier it will be to dig up. He was right.

Like you I have Colorado clay out here so I used my 4 inch aeration shoes ahead of time to speed up the saturation process.

Spade and a wheel barrow will work for that hole in a morning.

Level with sand and do it.

Sometimes I hire high school or college kids to help with projects like that.
