And so it begins: The Royals' second straight attempt to repeat as AL Champions, and first attempt to repeat as World Series champions.

In this thread, we'll track all non-gameday action. Roster moves, prospect news, etc.

I'll start the thread as usual, with division rivals thoughts. I still like KC to repeat as AL Central champs. Here's how I see the rest of it shaking out:

2) Indians - they have the pitching (and seem to have at least semi-Kluber-ed Cody Anderson, who added 3 mph to his fastball in the offseason). Will the offense hold up? I think this is a team that ends up looking a lot like the 2014 Royals. Francisco Lindor will solidify their IF defense over the full season, and is a help with the bat. I think this club is still a year away from really breaking through - the offense still has a lot of question marks - but I like them to nab a wildcard spot.

Key Player(s): Michael Brantley. When Brantley returns - and how he hits when he does - will be critical to the Indians' ability to be good enough on offense.

Jason Kipnis. Kipnis has been an enigmatic offensive performer for the past several years. If he finally has a good offensive campaign from start to finish, Cleveland could make real noise.

Something of interest to me: For all the acclaim the Twins' farm system gets, I look at the Indians young players, and would much rather have them. Brad Zimmer is going to be a very good all-around CF. Clint Frazier has huge power potential and should arrive soon (2017). Lindor is a young stud.

3) Tigers - Old and dependent on a few stars. If Verlander and Sanchez are healthy and effective, they will be playoff contenders. I'm sure JD Martinez will continue to hit roid-aided bombs. I'm also pretty sure Victor Martinez's days as a huge power threat are gone.

Key player: Justin Verlander. Detroit people would have you believe he figured out how to succeed without his big fastball in September of last year. If that's true, and he returns to dominant form, Detroit will likely contend again.

Something of interest to me: Will Jose Iglesias stay healthy and not try to kill teammates in the dugout? His defense makes the whole group much better.

4) Twins - They won't lead the division or be in playoff contention for as long this year, but Minnesota will avoid the cellar.

Key Player: Miguel Sano. Huge power, huge K rate. Can he continue to drive the ball and be a plus offensive player? Probably needs to cut that 35 percent K percentage to do so.

Something of interest to me: Will teams challenge Sano inside with hard stuff? Working away, away, just lets his power play up. Also - will Mike Berardino continue to be the biggest beat writer homer in MLB?

5) White Sox - still managed by a shitty manager who can't control his clubhouse (The blame for the LaRoche thing really should fall on him, not the GM). Still have a shitty overall defense and a lot of douchebags on the team. They will once again look better on paper than they actually perform.

Key player: Carlos Rodon. The White Sox need Rodon to take a big step forward to make an actual move this season. He's got the talent...

And, as always, here are the prospects.

Davis' stuff hasn't been quite as sharp this season, but he's still in a 3 year stretch that's one of the best stretches ever. You would have to get a starting pitcher that could help us in 2017 out of that.
What about Trea Turner and their top two pitching prospects that aren't Giolito?

1 step forward, 1 step back.

This team is what it is. Not good enough, but not quite bad enough to throw in the towel either.

They'll be mediocre this year...sell next season's FA's consider offers for Wade if they're super

still feels a bit premature to throw in the towel. However I agree w/ Davis - he may get you a few good grabs. I don't know - it sucks this season.

Holland is a FA and should be available at the end of the year. Might be nice insurance for next season if we trade Davis.

Volquez and Morales both have mutual options which may make it harder to trade them - they're actually guys who might take them (10M each). Maybe Volquez can get a 2-yr deal elsewhere and maybe you let Morales go, but they are possibilities for next year. That leaves little for us to trade away

I agree. Neither has performed well enough to think they'd get a better deal elsewhere, IMO. Very likely both teams would take the mutual option for the run in 2017. If it were me, I would take the mutual on Volquez but I would explore other options on the DH spot outside of Morales.

Kansas City Royals: Cheslor Cuthbert is the Real Deal

Cheslor Cuthbert took over for Mike Moustakas (Moose) a few times in the past season and a half. Last season he came in to fill in for Moose while he dealt with family problems.

The unheralded rookie started 19 games for the Kansas City Royals in 2015. He slashed .217/.280/.370 in his first go around with the big league team. Those are far from impressive numbers, but Cuthbert made a few spectacular plays on defense which showed some of his talents.

Moose missed a lot of games this season. He’s dealt with two different injuries in 2016. He broke his thumb in early May then shortly after returning to play, he tore his ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) after he collided with Alex Gordon in Chicago in late May ending his season.

Cuthbert’s been the guy at third base ever since. He started the season off slowly batting .253/.272/.329 at the end of May. He got better in the month of June. He slashed .269/.306/.427 at the end of June. He’s gotten even better right before the end of July slashing .297/.327/.466 as of July 22nd.

Last nights game against the Texas Rangers showed how much Cuthbert’s improved offensively. He collected two hits, two walks and scored the first run of the game. His first hit he smashed passed the first baseman down the right field line. The right-fielder misplayed the ball, Cuthbert took third base with ease.

After the double, he later added a single and two walks showing his plate discipline is getting better. The 23-year-old rookie is hitting over .300 in 83 games played this season.

The man for Nicaragua is making his county proud with 71 hits, 13 doubles and nine home runs for the Kansas City Royals. He’s also drove in 33 runs this season.

Cuthbert plays great defense at third base as well. He may have five errors on the season but he has the ability to make an outstanding play anytime. Check out the video below for evidence.

The young stud has range and a cannon of an arm. He makes those types of defensive plays look way easier than they really are. Juan Uribe should get new insurance because he got robbed of a hit on that play. Lord have mercy.

Unbelievably, Cuthbert has a negative DRS (defensive runs saved) number (-3). He also carries a sub one UZR (ultimate zone rating) at 0.4. Apparently defensive metrics are somewhat flawed. Take a look at Eric Hosmer‘s defensive metrics to find out how badly.

The eye test tells me Cuthbert is a stud at third base. He’s got the defensive ability coupled with the talent to hit consistently on offense. He also adds power to a line up that desperately needs it. He might not have Moose like home run totals, but he hits for a better average making him more of a consistent hitter.

Mike Mousetakas might find himself on the trading block sometime soon if Cuthbert continues to improve in the big leagues. The Kansas City Royals also have a promising third baseman at Omaha. Hunter Dozier is a power hitter who might be with the big league team come this September.

Next: KC Royals: All-Time Franchise Leaders In Triples

The future is bright for Kansas City at the third base position. If this team can find consistent starting pitching, the Royals could win for years to come. Here’s hoping the injury bug goes away soon and the young talent can help improve this already solid baseball team.

I thought Cuthbert looked like he belonged last year. Let alone this year. He's always passed the eye test to me. That's why after 2017 I think we still have pieces to build around. Cuthbert, Mondesi, Perez, hopefully Gordon turns it around, Ventura.
