The NCAA hasn't updated it's site yet. If its accurate, 1 year is hardly a trend the way basketball's slide is.

I accurately specified that the information provided on the NCAA's site was through 2013.

Hopefully this one year dip doesn't become a seven year trend. Under 5,000 fans per game? Yikes. I knew college basketball was second tier, but even I was surprised by just how large the chasm was.

College basketball: 5,202 games played, 25,060,424 fans attended

College football: 782 games played, 35,340,049 fans attended

College football played 85% fewer games but had 41% more people attend them.

From your article...

The College Football Playoff's championship game drew 33.4 million viewers, the most-watched program in cable TV history after surpassing semifinal viewership numbers of around 28 million for both games.

No doubt. Get rid of SEC teams no one cares about and the numbers skyrocket...

See 2006 Rose Bowl
6 of the 10 most watched non-bowl games involved SEC teams. Every major conference except the PAC was represented by at least one team (unless you consider the Big 12 a major conference).

#2 Notre Dame at Florida State (13.25 million viewers; 10/18/14) ABC*
#3 Alabama vs. Missouri (12.8 million viewers; 12/6/14; SEC Championship) CBS
#4 Mississippi State at Alabama (10.3 million viewers; 11/15/14) CBS
#5 FSU vs. Georgia Tech 10.1 million views; 12/6/14; ACC title game) ABC
#6 Alabama at LSU (9.2 million viewers; 11/8/14) CBS
#7 FSU at Miami (8.74 million viewers 11/15/14) ABC
#8 Clemson at FSU (8.1 million viewers 9/20/14) ABC

Truly has nothing to do with Mizzou. I can accept they are having a rough go of it. Not the first team I liked that hasn't played well. My observation comes mostly from non Missouri fans anyway. If you haven't seen the same thing well....you have your head in the sand.
