Been listening to Shooter Jennings Family Man. He'll be at KC Crossroads on April 28th.

Been absolutely listening to the shit out of Andrew Bird lately. I've listened to him a lot in the past, but this latest album really grabbed me for some reason. Here is live performing one of my favorite cuts from the new album:

Wife is traveling for work, today is my 100th day on the wagon and my 5 year anniversary at the office. I am celebrating by putting together a list of my top 5 favorite grindcore bands.
5. Brutal Truth - Kill Trend Suicide - 1996 - Rochester, New York 4. Assück - Necrosalvation EP - 1989 - Saint Petersburg, Florida 3. Decrypt - Holy Erotic Rapture - 2002 - Crown Point, Indiana |

2. Insect Warfare - World Extermination - 2007 - Houston, Texas
1. Magrudergrind - s/t - 2009 - Washington DC Obvious omissions: Carcass - One of my favorite bands of all time, their grind is second to none, but their overall body of work falls under my death metal scythe. Napalm Death - The creators, they had a stretch of udder crap to end the 90's and I'm not as up on their new stuff as a lot of people are. Pig Destroyer - These guys are masters, it's just simply a style preference for me. Rotten Sound - Again, badasses, just a style preference. Enjoy. |

Split Cranium.
Isis and Circle. Catchy as hell punk from masters of experimental and post metal. Digging. I started listening to it and thought, "Eh. I'll give a track or two a listen. Not really in the mood for anything hard tonight." 25 minutes later, I'm through the album. Kind of Motorhead-esque.

The year is 1989, small town Kansas. I'm in the 8th grade, flipping through the latest addition of Metal Maniacs magazine and I see an add for a band claiming "the heaviest album ever recorded". The add was for Obituary's "Slowly We Rot". Some time later I'm on a trip to KC with my parents (who are both school teachers) and we stop by Oak Park Mall. I immediately separate myself from my folks and head straight to Sam Goody, lawn mowing money secured in front pocket. I search and there it is on cassette, Obituary "Slowly We Rot". I buy it.
Sitting in the back seat of my dads charcoal grey Volvo, my ever interested dad who is trying his best to be involved in his sons life, asks "what'd ya buy son". I mumble something about some music and he probes further, ultimately demanding I open my cassette and hand it over so him, my mom, and myself can enjoy it on the ride home. I pull out my new cassette, unwrapped it and hand it to my dad. He looks at it then proceeds to put it in the cassette player....all 3 of us shit our pants for very different reasons. Full album: Today I'm 35 and my dad is 67. He's swinging by in an hour or so and we'll make our way to the Royals home opener. |
