Ewan McGregor Wants to Jump Back Into 'Star Wars'

While the main series moves forward past Return of the Jedi with this winter’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm’s anthology movies are free to tell stories set at any point in the franchise’s mythology — something that comes as good news to Ewan McGregor, who wants to return to his prequel role of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

“I’d be happy to do the story from episodes three where I finish up and Alec Guinness [who played the older Kenobi in the original Star Wars movies] starts,” the actor said during an appearance at the Edinburgh Film Fest in Scotland this weekend.

It was Star Wars, McGregor explained, that made him want to be an actor for the first time, thanks to seeing his uncle Denis Lawson in the original installment. “I remember going to see him in Star Wars in my shorts and red socks when my mum picked us up from school,” he recalled. “I was six and it blew my brains out and that was it. I remember saying of Denis when I was nine I want to be an actor.”

He’s excited about seeing The Force Awakens when it’s released, he added. “It’s not a fanatical thing. I’m really pleased I’m part of the legacy of it and happy to see it and I’ve seen the trailer and it looks like they’ve absolutely nailed it.”

Star Wars wasn’t the only return McGregor talked about during his appearance; he also talked about a potential sequel to 1996’s Trainspotting, saying that although there was no script, he’s met with director Danny Boyle, and that “it would make sense for the sequel to be made in 2016, the 20th anniversary of the original.” Well, unless MacGregor’s busy making a standalone Obi-Wan Star Wars movie, of course…
I'd prefer that anyone involved in the prequels be banished from Star Wars forever, including both Ewan McGregor and Jar Jar Binks. It's like Ewan's saying "sure, I drove the get away car but I didn't actually play a role in trying to kill the franchise" - Bullshit. He played a role alright.

BTW - IMO the Trainspotting sequel would be interesting if it came from the mind of Irvine Welsh.

I really liked McGregor's portrayal of Obi Wan and his character is so much more interesting than we were led to believe in the original film, some of which is explored in The Clone Wars series.

Actually, after watching the entire Clone Wars series, there's no way that Kenobi was a "hermit", nor did he spend that entire time on Tatooine.

So many tales to tell...

Ewan is literally like the only good thing about the prequels. No one else could deliver the shitty dialogue and not have it come off awful. Not Portman, definitely not Hayden. Not even Ian McDiarmid. Maybe Liam Neeson. He was OK.

Obi-Wan's such a cool character, and he's such a good actor, there's no reason for it not to happen...especially since we'd likely get a much better director and script.

Story, script, directing and better performances from those around him are what give me high hopes that an Obi Wan spinoff would more successful than the prequels.

Who wouldn't want to see Obi Wan off on a crusade? Better yet, there's no reason why he shouldn't face Vader during that 20 year time span if not literally, then figuratively.

Greg Grunberg can't say enough good things about the movie.

Some people may not have loved some of the movies, but it’s a whole world you can’t deny how super compelling and awesome it is, and I can’t believe I’m part of it. Like there were moments when J.J. would yell, ‘Cut’,’ and then come over to me and go, ‘Are you f–king kidding me? Did that just happen? Did I just pan from C-3PO to R2-D2 to Han Solo and then to you?’

I spent seven weeks in London and it was heaven. And it’s crazy cause usually I’m the first person that J.J. calls to bounce ideas off. This one is so top secret, and so on lockdown, that all I can do is ask him, ‘How’s it going?’ and he’s like, ‘Oh, I’m really happy.’ So I know if he’s happy it’s just gonna be incredible.

I think the movie could be about Vader trying to hunt down Obi-Wan, and Obi-Wan discovering who Vader is.

Would make for some hair-raising scenes. Plus more work for JEJ...and a great excuse to get someone back in a Vader suit...

You can't defend McGregor using the Clone Wars series. The fact is, he was boring and bland in the prequels, through no fault of his own, and will always be associated to the abomination that were the prequel movies.

While the character of Obi Wan may be interesting there are no ways to tell a story about him without the audience knowing the ultimate conclusion. It would be a misstep on Disney's behalf to even entertain the idea of making a major motion picture revolving around him when there are so many other areas to explore.

Your asking for a second prequel. Quit it.

So by that train of thought, Darth Vader shouldn't appear in any Anthology movie, nor should Boba Fett because we already know the ultimate conclusion?

No offense personally but that is the dumbest reason I've ever heard for not making a film.

It would only work if they brought back Hayden to get the full effect of Vader vs Obi-Wan.

Luckily, I never take what you say personally. I'm saying BASING a movie, or prequel of movies, on events that have been predetermined are fruitless and far less likely to "capture the imagination" of the ticket buying public. It's one of the 10,000 issues the prequels had going into them.

Anything associated to the prequels should be killed with fire.

Plus, everyone knows Boba escapes the Sarlacc.

The reason that Disney purchased LucasFilm properties for $4 billion dollars was to further exploit the characters. There are scores of new books, comics and yet to be made films set between the end of Revenge of the Sith to just before the beginning of Episode VII.

There are two different kinds of feature films in development at this point: Episode VII-IX and the Anthology series. The Episodes are self-explanatory and are mainly about the Skywalker clan. Anthologies will cover characters such as Boba Fett, Han Solo, Obi-Wan and one off's like the upcoming Rogue One, which will detail the heist of the original Death Star plans.

While the Anthology stories may not be to your liking, there are tens of millions of Star Wars fans anxiously waiting to see tales of their favorite characters on the big screen.

And the EU is dead. Nothing exists in that universe any longer. Everything moving forward is Canon. Everything not the movies or animated series are not.
