Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

Not to make light of it, but this thing really could not be any more like a movie. Really if you wrote it people would say it was unrealistic.

Yeah, I really get the feeling that they think they've got this thing. They're only searching a 3 mile by 3 mile area. They just don't want to invite scrutiny by saying they've got it until they can definitively say it's there.

It's interesting to me that they're not mentioning the Chinese pings now. Either they inherently assume that the Australian readings are more reliable, or the fact that they got two hours of signals is a strong confirmation. It sounds like the Australian ship has more advanced equipment, too.

Whoa. The 7th Fleet guy is giving all the good info. He said that the pings were at one-second intervals, which is right. It got stronger when the sensor went deeper, and it got louder and softer as they moved, which indicates that the ship was passing the source. They've also detected two pings of the same frequency at slightly different locations, which is good since there are two black boxes.

The fact that he's saying "slightly different locations" sure implies that they've got a good feel of the location.
