Sources have been saying the Cubs were ready to deal from their MLB depth by potentially offering a Baez, Russell, Schwarber, or Happ, but now sources are saying that they may not. So who the **** knows any more.
I still cannot believe how badly Maddon mind-****ed Schwarber by putting him at leadoff. The guy is a born 5 hitter; maybe a 6 hitter. He draws enough walks and takes enough bad pitches that I think he's more of a 5 hole guy, though.

That said - dude's not an OFer. They really need to find a way to get him to the AL for a good young pitcher. I'm not sure if his value was torpedoed too badly to move but Salazar didn't exactly set the world on fire. A Schwarber/Salazar deal could be just what the doctor ordered for both sides. Almora takes over full-time in CF, Happ would play a really good LF, IMO and Heyward continues to waste 600 ABs/season while giving you roughly 1/3 of what he's getting paid by playing a strong RF.

Your IF remains untouched. Almora appears to have the skill-set to grow into the leadoff role if they'd just commit to him there.

I'm sure his value was hurt a bit by last year compared to the god like status he earned after the WS, but once he got out of the leadoff spot his numbers did a complete 180 and had a near .900 OPS for the 2nd half of the season. His top 3 spots in the order were 1st, 5th, and 2nd. His OPS was .693 and .720 hitting 1st and 2nd respectively and 1.035 hitting 5th.

However, I doubt they would move him for a Salazar. In his 4 years he's only managed to make it close to a complete year once.

I'd be shocked if they moved Schwarber if only because recent history has told me the Cubs have been a year behind when it has come to trading their talented youth (Castro, Soler, and you could even say Schwarber follows the exact same mold of 1 year too late). He pretty obviously doesn't have a spot on the field but neither did those other 2 players.

As a Cubs fan, wouldn't you be at least a little concerned if the Cardinals got Stanton for a couple of their more expendable pitching prospects and his contract?

That should really say all that needs be said. Take on the !@#$ing deal, Mozeliak. He's going to opt out anyway.
the way they market is moving, especially after the Harper/Mercado deals, $30 million a year for a guy that hits 50 home runs may be considered cheap and he will opt out.

I'm okay with the escalating salaries. All teams are making money hand over fist without doing a damn thing on the field. The owners are all rich ****ers. The values of their franchises have went through the roof. $144 million cost to buy to $1.3 BILLION value in the Cardinals case. Some of this money should go to the ones making this pile of profit money for the owners.

And yes, Mo and Dewitt need to grow a pair and get the deal done.

Those early picks can be leveraged for MLB talent, though, and right away. If Singer falls to them, Id expect the Giants to be all over him (and him to be in an MLB rotation in late 2019, possibly).

If they get Stanton, I think the Giants stand a good chance to be legitimate contenders the next few years. I see more than a .500 team.

It's a good enough situation to be attractive to Stanton, IMO, in the short term. And if they "Phillie" it, he can bail.

not so fast with the conclusions.

Buster Onley reporting that the meeting was only to see if Stanton would approve a trade to San Fran.

Wake me when we get a damn meeting of our own.

They don't give SF the meeting if they haven't gotten a deal they'll accept. Moreover, they've now let Stanton know that they won't call his bluff and tell him it's STL or stay stuck in Miami. So now the Cards have to sell him on STL over SF which is a an sight harder than selling it over Miami.

Mozeliak missed a chance to come in hard and get a deal done. He sat ass and now he's lost all opportunity to direct the outcome.

Because the only time Mozeliak is aggressive is if it's to sign left-handed relievers or give multi-year deals to bench bats.

Big picture on this is that the only way Stanton was going to come here is if the Cardinals were the only real player. The simple fact that they are meeting greatly diminishes Mo's chances of getting it done. He drug his feet AGAIN and we're going to lose AGAIN.

Not following here. Our minor leagues has talent now. Some such as Reyes, Kelly and Weaver are already here.

We just went through that gap of minor league talent that SF is going to go through the next 2-3 years. Our gap is over, theirs is just beginning.

And I can live with that as long as something gets done. We need at least two big bats next year. Yelich would be my next target. Overpay Hosmer and move Carp to 3rd or trade him in a package for a 3B.

Mo and Dewitt have to know they have an off-season like the last few years, their base is going to revolt.

That's where we disagree though. This fan base won't revolt until the team really tanks. Coming this>< close will still put people in the seats for a long time in STL.

I hope its not a scenerio we have to consider and they get a big bat. I do think "this close" wont fly this year. Hopefully we wont have to see whose right.

Yelich will cost you significantly more than Stanton would have. Some of that talented youth you were just touting would be going back to Miami. I couldnt imagine a deal that didn't involve Reyes, Flaherty, and 1 more from your top 10 and maybe some throw in.

I heard the Braves were shopping Matt Adams.
