Yeah, there can be some truth to the idea that the moon's gravitational pull can have an influence. It's just that there's not really much of a correlation between the moon's distance to earth and an eclipse (though technically it's closer during total eclipses than it is in annular eclipses). It's closer today than it will be on Monday, and it was far closer back in May than it is today.

Yeah, it's still really uncertain at this point. I'm no weather expert, but just reading weather nerd forums & various Twitter feeds, the only truly safe play at this point seems like Oregon or Idaho. There are question marks the rest of the way down the path. It's not like everywhere will actually have clouds, but it'll at least be "partly cloudy" enough that there's no guarantees.

Though I'm obviously hoping for clear skies, it won't be a complete bust even if there are a few clouds here and there.
  1. Most places I've seen have had "partly cloudy" forecasts, so it shouldn't be cloudy the entire time most likely. You should still get good views of the partial eclipse stages here and there at a minimum.
  2. It's still gonna get crazy dark for a couple minutes.
  3. You should still have the crazy effect of a 360-degree sunset.
  4. Animals should all respond in the weird way people talk about.

I don't think they really do. Just that there will be a weather pattern that is going to produce clouds and showers. As DaFace said, hopefully there's some breaks in there, but when you're talking about a total eclipse that's 2 minutes long, it only takes one cloud to mess it up. I think they're just playing it safe.

Am I the only one not going outside to see this shit for fear of blinding themselves for the rest of their lives?

Like....this thing isn't worth the risk. I don't care if you tell me the glasses are fine. I'll be inside fully functioning while, no doubt, thousands get irreversible eye damage from this.

It's really not that big of a deal. The glasses are perfectly safe. Even glancing at it isn't going to cause permanent damage. It's staring at it unprotected that can really mess you up.

Its basically called using your brain. If you are staring at the sun without significant protection... welp.

Even with fakes, it's really highly improbable that you'd have any real issue. If it hurts or makes you squint, stop doing it.
