Just How Bad Are the Chiefs at Drafting?

Apparently not bad at all. In fact, only 1 team has drafted more pro bowlers in the last ten years.

What we got offensively is a testament to Charles and Davis.

This team would have gotten more offensively if he recognized and relied on the ground game more, and used that to set up the passing game.

You gotta pick a side.

In just the last three off-seasons, the "new" Dorsey-Reid management team has acquired Alex Smith through trade, signed Chase Daniel, signed Tyler Bray as a rookie FA, drafted Aaron Murray in the 2014 draft and signed Terrell Pryor in FA in the 2015 off-season.

These guys aren't sitting on the position. They aren't sitting on any position. They are attempting to build a winning team in entirety. You don't do that overnight and you don't have an All-Pro QB after a single rookie season.

However, with back to back winning seasons for the first time in over 20 years and fielding what looks to be the most complete Chiefs team in several decades, I think that they are on the right path in a relatively short amount of time.

I know that there is a handful of squeaky wheels around here that pound the table every day for the Chiefs to spend a first round pick on a QB just to say that they spent a first round pick on a QB. Manuel, Weeden, Gabbert, Ponder, Freeman, Sanchez, Manziel, Tebow, Quinn, Russell, Young, Leinhart...those are some of your stellar first rounders after the Alex Smith/Aaron Rogers 2005 draft. Jake Locker? Sam Bradford? Griffin? Tannehill?

Even the "hits" like Matt Ryan, Jay Cutler, Cam Newton and Matt Stafford - how's their playoff success been? Newton has 1 playoff win. Stafford has 0 playoff win. Cutler has 1 playoff win. Ryan has 1 playoff win.

Andrew Luck was considered the best QB prospect since Elway. The only "sure thing." That's the way shit goes.

Alex Smith was two special teams fumbles from the Super Bowl with the 49ers and has had back to back winning seasons and a playoff appearance in his first two seasons with the Chiefs and people want to bitch about us not taking any of these super studs that have been available in the first round? Okay...

Staggering by Chiefs standards I know. 1 has been a very good QB for 7 years for them.
In the mean time they have taken 6 OL all of which have flamed out / been mediocre.

According to Jamaal, he was hurt all year and there were times he couldn't run it. Called it his most frustrating year as a pro because of all the injuries. He then went out and told the media that he wanted the Chiefs to upgrade the OL because of how bad it was.

I'll go look it up, but I bet the run pass ratio was much better the year before when the line was better and Jamaal was healthy.

How many playoff wins (shit, how about just playoff appearances) does Stafford have QB'ing a team that has featured Megatron and Suh and the like?

According to this board, having an "elite" QB that loves to go down range to an unstoppable target like Johnson (who, along with JJ Watt, is considered the best non-QB player in the entire NFL) should goddamn guarantee a Super Bowl victory.

Due to the offensive line, I don't know that they could have

Of course how horrible Mark Sanchez is he has more playoff wins than the entire Chiefs franchise since Super Bowl 4. Clearly the Chiefs are this stacked super team now, so we should easily surpass what he did. Or wait I forgot those Jets were the 85 Bears all over.

Ever since Kyle Orton's historically awful 2005 campaign, only one quarterback has started 15-plus games and finished with a worse passer rating than 2012 Mark Sanchez (66.9). That man was 2009 Mark Sanchez (63.0). Sanchez is not the worst quarterback in NFL history, but he might be the worst who ever stuck around.

I think the players this regime has drafted so far will turn out pretty good overall...its hard to evaluate now because its still incomplete.

A lot of QB busts are due, IMO, to the fact that no one has the patience anymore to let these guys sit and learn, while working on mechanics, so that they are actually ready when they are put into the starting role.

I agree. This is what we're doing with Murray and why I think he will be our QBOTF.

Based on the fact that Murray despite his draft fall due to height and an ACL tear is a damn good QB prospect with an excellent resume and a perfect fit for Reid's offense.
