Tom Petty RIP

Apparently he had a massive heart attack. Bad news day.

Loved Petty. Especially that late 80s to early 90s period. He was on fire. But he was around for so long it seems like everyone has a favorite Petty era.

RIP to one of the greats.

Tom Petty was our contemporary Bob Dylan who could actually sing !!

If you guys get a chance go on Netflix and watch Petty's documentary. Absolutely awesome !! He is definitely a man of integrity and character through and through and the story he told about him standing firm in principle against his own record co. just prior to the "Damn the Torpedoes" album being released was amazing. Dude is NAILS !! Don't "f" with Tom !!

My all time favorite Petty song !!!

The video very cool.
Don Felder is also from Gainesville and gave guitar lessons to Petty when he was 14.

Never got to see him but have no doubt you are correct. He truly loved his fans genuinely and felt he was apart of them for sure.

Don Felder also credits Duane Allman teaching him guitar and especially slide. Glenn Frey was such a egotistical prick running Felder off.

Yes he was. Both Henley and Frey as talented as they were, were also "alpha insecure" as well. Have you watched that 3 and 1/2 documentary on the Eagles on Netflix ?? Very good and you get a bunch of insight into all the guys for sure.

They were right about one thing, though. Felder can't sing worth a shit. He shouldn't be allowed near a microphone unless he's doing harmony.

Oh no doubt ! And I totally get the shenanigan they pulled on Felder to get him out of the studio for awhile so that Henley could get it recorded. Funny but sad.

I'll never understand how being a godlike guitar player in a great band wasn't enough. Yeah, I get that Frey and Henley were dicks. But they were right.

Even when "dicks" are right, it's that "dickishness" that comes back to bite you in the ass (a la suing for the music rights for HC of which Felder wrote the music never getting the monetary credit either (not the lyrics of course) settling out of court after the divorce. Had they not been "dicks" maybe Felder would have accepted the fact he could not give his song any justice with his voice and it was only fitting that Henley sing it. But when the world sees you as "god of music" egos get highly over inflated and very self-absorbed and manure happens then.

I saw him this summer, he opened for REO and Styx, he was ok. I bought one of his records in the 80's, it was in the cutout bin, there were a couple decent songs on it, wouldn't have made the Eagles cut but they were worth the $2 I paid for it. Pulled it out and listened to it before the Styx concert but he didn't play any of his stuff, just Eagles covers, Tommy Shaw came out and did Take it Easy on Banjo with him.
