The NFL is an oligopoly. Goodell doesn't have the right to selectively enforce punishments, often accused of protecting his buddies. I think forever people will wonder why he threw the book at the Saints, then did everything in his power to cover up spygate and Ray rice. Arguably, by selectively choosing punishments he's giving certain teams competitive advantage under a business structure where that is a complete no no. |

There are going to be some major heads rolling. It sounds like Baltimore knew exactly what happened in the elevator, tried to cover it up and talked Goodell into doing them a solid and only making it two games. Bad stuff

I don't understand what people want.
For years, all I have read is that Goodell has too much power. Players and fans complain that Roger acts as judge, jury and executioner. Now, people want him to do more and wield more power and authority? Which is it? The NFL has almost always followed a policy of letting the legal system come to a resolution before deciding NFL punishment. They almost always followed an innocent until proven guilty plan. That's exactly what they are doing in San Fran. In this case, the legal system gave Ray Rice the lightest slap on the wrist that they could. The legal system said - no jail, no probation, just PTI. The NFL followed suit in its punishment of Rice - just like they have done in the past. Now, people want the NFL to become big brother? The Ray Rice incident was between Ray, his wife and the State of New Jersey. Do people want the NFL, who has no standing in the case, to be able to subpoena witnesses, obtain evidence and become their own judge and jury? Years ago Roethlisberger was accused of rape in Lake Tahoe and there was an investigation that was eventually dropped. Fans want the NFL to have the power to obtain rape kits, examine the victims, have "independent" doctors make conclusions and then come out with their own form of punishment based on the independent investigation? What if Goodell said, "I know the police don't have enough evidence to pursue a claim, but I believe the young lady and Ben is suspended for life." Sounds like a great plan. Nobody gave a crap about Hardy playing in week one - nobody. A judge already said guilty, but that wasn't enough to fly banners and have every tv network schill give an opinion. No 6 second video clip - no care. I can hardly wait to see how they are forced to resolve this. I expect Roger to come out with a 500 page treatise of every off field incident they could think of with a corresponding penalty. 5 hits with a switch, no blood - 2 games. 5+ hits with a switch and blood - 1 year. Bare hand and welt - 1/2 game. Throw a drink in the face of a drunken lady at a bar - 2 games unless female spit on player first, then 1 game. Assault on a male - just boys being boys.

Agreed if they have signed contracts with conduct clauses and video showing the 'accused' committing their crime.

His business model was hiring only people fresh out of school with no experience. He would then over work/under pay them until they quit. One of my buddies described it as a culture similar to the movie The Firm. |

He doesn't make the decisions unilaterally. Many are covered under the CBA with the union. Even then, there are varying degrees of conduct and some one has to make a decision. I'd say its probably impossible to please everyone in these situations, and, there's no evidence he did "everything in his power to cover up Ray Rice." I don't even know what his motivation would be for trying to cover it up. I don't have any particular like for Goodell. To me, he's just a guy who acts on behalf of the owners. People are buttburt over rule changes--that would happen without Goodell. The league is concerned about liability and getting its players injured. I don't have to like the rules, but I understand why they are there. |

And by the way, the main reason this is an issue is because Goodell. Made it one. The minute he got on his high horse in year 1 and started fining and suspending players for conduct. |
