Well, the lack of commercials made up for it! Absolutely loved the opening Overture without the typical commercials and trailers.

I didn't think it was too over the top with the exception of one guy shot in the face, and even that was over the top.

It reminded me of the MiB scene where Tony Schaloub gets shot in the head.

Same here. I vividly remember going to see it in the theater the 1st time. Caught a midnight showing with my best friend growing up.
I immediately felt like I was watching something monumental and that era for independent film was fantastic. The last couple of years have been on the upswing for independent film- not that QT is a per se independent film any longer, though tH8 only cost $40-45 million to make.

That was the Esquire in Clayton, and those reactions were remarkable BECAUSE it was/is a nice place to see movies.

You can't really control that. Just dumb luck, or rather misfortune, you ended up in the same showtime as some jackass or group of jackasses.

This totally reminded me of going to see Above the Law back when I was a kid. The theater was packed, and just before the show a rather large black lady, her friend, and I'm assuming their kids are looking for seats. They have to split up, and the lady and her friend are next to me and my buddy on the right, and the children on our left. We had staked out the very center seats. In retrospect, it would have been polite if we just moved down 2 spots, but I was probably in 4th grade, and we all know kids are all self-centered little shits!

The entire movie, this woman is reacting to every scene verbally and physically. She's even talking at the screen as if the characters are going to hear her and should heed her advice.

To top it off, she had snuck in McDonald's, snacks, and drinks for their entire group. So, after the lights dim she turns to me and asks me to start passing down the food over to the children. Cheeseburgers, one after another, then fries, drinks, and whatever else. Then throughout the movie also passing over various packs and bags of candy.

I actually didn't really care, and her comments and behavior during the movie such as action scenes we're pretty entertaining or hilarious. Maybe, under other circumstances when I was older and a different movie than just a popcorn action flick, I probably would be more annoyed.

Either way, at the time, I kind of didn't want to pass judgment because you don't know everyone else's circumstance. She could have just gotten off work, in a rush to take everyone to the movie and not able to spend so much for tickets plus concessions at hiked up prices. Of course, none of it could be the case, and she just decided that the rules didn't apply to her and she could care less about consideration for those around her?

I don't want to overplay the 'rowdiness' of the crowd.

It wasn't just bedlam, people yelling at everything. It was understandable reactions to the events on screen. The 'holy shit' when Vincent wrecked his car actually added to the experience, because it was pretty close to my reaction as well.

The one other theater experience that stands out to me like Pulp Fiction for audience reaction was There's Something About Mary. That movie had the audience ROLLING in spots. Really added to the experience to share belly laughs at the hi jinks.

Saw it tonight. Liked it. Amazed at how long it was, yet how it seemed to move so well, particularly after the intermission.

Jurrasic Park came out in 1993. Forest Gump was in July of 94, Lion King in June. Shawshank came out about a month before Pulp Fiction.

I remember Shawshank was a complete flop in theaters. It didnt catch on until VHS and after its Oscar nominations.

Jurrassic Park was released in 1993. June 11th, to be exact (wide release). It was not in any first run theaters in Oct 1994.

It may have been lingering in some discount houses (the release window to VHS at that time was significantly longer than it is today to DVD/Blu-Ray.

Forest Gump was still playing because it was hit and had legs that year. Lion King is not in the list you provided...it was a hit, and was probably still playing, but not in the top 15.

Note that on your chart Jurrassic Park is only playing in 116 theaters and is in its 71st week of release.

Shawshank was in its 4th week. Other than Jurrassic and Forest, all of the other movies on your chart were out 5 weeks or less.

Shawshank cost about 25 million to make and made 28 million on its domestic run. The academy award nominations and the buzz that came with them certainly saved it from being a complete bomb. (Thankfully so, I still considered it to be one of the great movies of the early 90's).
