Per Mike Pereira via Twitter

Interesting day at NFL officiating clinic. Biggest point of emphasis for 2014..Illegal contact and defensive holding. More offense!
10:40pm - 18 Jul 14

NFL says they are offsetting this emphasis with an emphasis on calling offensive pass interference. Not an even trade in my opinion.

Ignore super bowls and look at the teams reaching the playoffs every other year at the very least.

It's been a Cowboys (the exception given their playoff resume) Giants, Ravens, Steelers, Packers, Patriots and Peyton Manning league with the likes of the 49 ers, Colts and Seahawks looking to be the next perennial fixtures.

So, ignore the far more important thing, and the thing that goes against your side, and look at the far less important thing, because it seems to support your position if you just look at it at surface level?

You can't get to the Super Bowl without making the playoffs first.

The playoff field -especially in the NFC- has largely consisted of the same franchises year in and year out.

Now this isn't favoritism in the promoting a particular set of franchises for its own sake, but a byproduct of emphasizing rules that imbalance the game in favor of the offense and therefore the position that best ensures an efficient offense.

Since realignment in 2002, here have been the playoff teams with the number of times they've qualified for postseason:

Indianapolis: 11
New England: 10
Green Bay, Philadelphia, Seattle: 8
Pittsburgh, Baltimore: 7
Denver, San Diego, Atlanta, New York Giants: 6
Cincinnati, New Orleans, New York Jets: 5
Kansas City, Dallas, Minnesota, San Francisco, Carolina, Tennessee: 4
Chicago, Washington, Tampa Bay: 3
St. Louis, Jacksonville, Houston, Arizona: 2
Miami, Oakland, Detroit, Cleveland: 1

Seven teams have made the playoffs at a rate better once every other season since realignment. Four of these teams have started "star" quarterbacks (Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers and Andrew Luck) in the majority -if not all- of their postseason appearances.

The remaining 25 teams have made the playoffs less than 42% of the seasons since realignment; one of which hasn't made the postseason at all. These teams have been quarterbacked by the likes of Rex Grossman, Mark Sanchez, Jake Delhomme and Mark Brunnell.

Really don't know if I have to explain this any further, but it seems to me GoChargers isn't exactly wrong in his analysis.

If the goal was to make the playoffs, and only to make the playoffs, GoChargers would still be wrong, but he'd at least have a stronger case. Since the goal is to win Super Bowls, he's got nothing. Elite QBs have been a great ticket to the playoffs since long before the changes of the 2000s. Just ask the Dolphins, Broncos and 49ers about that.
