Berry's impact is minimized by his usage as a hybrid LB.

There aren't a lot of strong safeties that could play as well, as consistently, inside the box as Berry does, but his ball hawking, playmaking potential, that he displayed at Tennesee his first 2 seasons before Kiffen got there are are lost in this role.

His talent is being wasted.
I wouldn't mind seeing Berry move to Free Safety. I disagree his talents are wasted at Strong Safety. The Jets and Browns both threw big money at Strong Safety. The Browns turned down a terrific strong safety in TJ Ward, in fact, to upgrade to Donte Whitner who can play Strong but has the versatility and range to do other things. Especially rushing the passer.

And yes, they are asked to do a lot mentally. Is it any surprise that your typically Ryan Strong Safeties are considered very smart? Landry, Leonhard. They play a lot of snaps inside the box so they communicate a lot with LBs. And there is so much complexity at that level especially with Safeties constantly making adjustments into a jayhawk formation or going in on blitzes. The Strong Safety makes the call on a lot of these adjustments and disguises.

I'm not sure yet if the Ryan defense is the right approach. But if we're running it, then the trend is that these defenses are throwing a ton of money at Strong Safeties, not Free.

depends on whether they are going to continue paying a box safety huge money

Seems to me that Dorsey isn't going to want to overpay a box safety.

If they aren't prepared to do that then maybe they should trade him

Why do you say that? Isn't it possible they didn't sign a box safety because they think Berry is the guy? And Reid seems to like keeping his superstars around. I would be shocked if Berry isn't extended. If he and Houston aren't, to me that's a disgrace.

I think the best way to make cap space with Berry will be by extending him.

the reason this didn't sign a FS is because Abdullah/commings are the guys?

Berry is on the old draft pay scale and was drafted very, very high for a box safety. Crennel was an idiot for not putting Berry at FS from Day 1. That creates a problem when it comes time for his 2nd contract.

Most players are not going to want to play for less when they get a new contract and Berry is overpaid for a box safety imo.

Will Berry take less money putting him inline with other box safeties?
Will the Chiefs be willing to continue to pay a box safety like a FS?
Can they meet in the middle?

These questions need to be answered.

If the answers are 'No" then trading Berry might be beneficial in the long run.

They better have a plan either way.

Anyone is tradable for the right price. Someone offers you a first rounder an a third for Poe or Alex smith, you'd have to think about it.
No you wouldn't. Not unless Andrew Luck is on the board, and he isn't.

Berry plays the box because he's a great run stuffer and can go man to man with tight ends. They should pick up Deone Bucannon in the mid rounds. He's listed as SS but he can roam the field and lay the wood.
