Electronics New Desktop Tower - Page 9

I'm in need of a new desktop computer tower. I have a 20" Samsung monitor so I only need the tower. My current HP is about 7 years old and the display driver keeps crashing, even when uninstalling and installing again, it's running slow, and crashes multiple browsers on a consistent basis.

The max I want to spend is $500. I don't play games on it but I do stream sports. Other than that, I don't use it much for anything but browsing the net.

I'm not a tech guy so any help would be appreciated in pointing me to something that will perform well without breaking the bank.

Well after talking with one of my tech buddies we decided a pre-built unit was probably the easiest since I'm not looking to do anything spectacular with it.

He recommended this one and we went with it.

Apple pioneered the OS GUI. The "Desktop" interface. The mouse. The all-in-one computer. They exploded the portable MP3 player market. They essentially built the tablet market. The iPhone was the most popular smartphone for ages, and remains one of the top. Their OS is by far the easiest to use for the general user. They led the way in desktop OS/mobile OS integration, which even Microsoft has now followed. Their App Store model has now been copied by Microsoft and others.

Apple sure as **** didn't invent nor pioneer the mouse. Apple may have resuscitated the tablet, but by no means did they pioneer it. They ripped off the iPhone name from Cisco and got sued for it. They don't invent, they use or improve existing ideas. I suppose you'll give them credit for the cloud concept next. I am not the least bit naïve nor uninformed.

I believe the term used by Jobs is "re-imagine" existing products. They re-imagined the phone, tablet, etc.

With regards to the tablet, Apple certainly wasn't the first to market, but they were the first to build the tablet around the finger being method of input instead of the stylus like Microsoft.

They copied the mouse technology from a copier company. Ironic

Got the new computer up and running and also bought a better modem so we would get faster speeds as our was pretty dated. We had to call because our internet was dropping it's connection every 30 minutes and they informed us that our dated modem didn't support the fast connection we were paying for and that perhaps the modem wasn't able to keep up and was resetting itself every time too much data came in. Something about a 2 vs a 3 but don't remember the terminology.

Everything was working great except I get an email from our internet provider that we went over our 250GB data plan. I checked previous usage and we normally run anywhere from 1-4GB per day. However, in the past week we had days ranging from 40-80GB use in one day! So we reset the router configuration, changed the password and scanned for viruses. No viruses found like Malware that we can see.

The spike in data usage started on the same day we setup the new computer.

The only other thing I can think of is that we tried to DVR Fargo from DTV On-Demand that day as well but it would start. It would get halfway through and then start again. We just kept letting it do this in hopes it would work. Could that have spiked our data usage that much?

Thoughts?

A faster modem will spike your usage if you're downloading more now that you have the capability. I don't know if that fits your situation or not.

OK, then it's probably not the modem. But sometimes it's not obvious that you're changing your usage habits. For example, if you stream video, sometimes the quality of the stream is auto-selected so you might have had some lower res stream before and HD now. Of course, that only happens if your internet speeds are marginal (like mine out in the country). You're probably on one of those high-falutin' city firehose lines with mega speed where you've always streamed in HD.
