Game of Thrones (spoiler-free zone)
A few have suggested it, might as well test the waters. The idea is to give people who haven't read the books a safe place to talk about the show.
A few quick ground rules:

I had a sense that something like that was going to happen, but it was still shockingly executed.

This is when a whole lot of people will say they are going to quit watching the show. But they won't.

If those very viewrs held steadfast when Ned was beheaded then they'll be able to handle this.

Wow. Episodes 9s packed a punch in the first two GoT seasons and tonight's was no different.
In the end, Robb's decision to choose love over duty bit him in the ass. In that way, he was never truly his father's son. Ned would have never made such a "mistake" and pissed off his allies in that way. Of course, I don't think anybody envisioned an ending to Robb's life quite like that. That death scene at the end was magnificantly done. There was an element of dread you could sense even before The Rains of Castamere was played and yet the way it played out was still quite shocking. Having Robb go down in a mess of arrows after watching his wife being stabbed to death, followed by Catelyn having to see him be killed by Roose Bolton before facing her own death as well. The kind of chilling stuff you don't often (ever?) see on television. Walder Frey just doesn't give a ****, does he? I had mostly forgotten him from S1, but he had some great scenes tonight. He clearly doesn't care at all about any kind of retribution (not that I imagine there will be much coming considering they don't have a leader at the moment). With Roose Bolton being a traitor to the Stark cause, that's another house that they've lost as well. Considering we didn't see the Blackfish get killed, I'm guessing he survived when he left the hall and there will at least be an attempt at retribution from him. Edmure likely won't be doing much of anything, though. The only Starks of any signficance left are Bran (on his long journey to find that three-eyed raven of his), Arya (who again will apparently be on the run, this time with the Hound, a nicer guy than he appears), and Sansa (stuck in King's Landing in marriage to Tyrion). And, of course, Jon Snow is a little bit too tied up in the wildling/white walker issues of the north to worry about the politics of the south right now. None of them are exactly in any position to take the fight to the Lannisters at the moment. Revenge for Ned (and now Catelyn/Robb) will have to wait...if it ever even occurs. As for the rest of the episode, there were also some great moments with Jon Snow, Bran, and Dany's army. Jon wasn't kidding when he said he was still a member of the Night's Watch (as if there was any doubt, he's probably the most Ned-like, loyal/honorable character left on the show). He even tellingly left Ygritte to get back to his duty. Will be interesting to see how that all plays out. The Bran story finally went somewhere as we found out that he can not only get into the minds of animals, but also humans as well. Guess that makes him some kind of a unique warg. I can see that kind of power coming in handy down the road. Dany also took Yunkai with the help of Daario, who proved his loyalty (and his badassness) in a big way. So when are they going to stop freeing slaves and make the journey back to Westeros to win back her crown? Gotta be soon. |

Ned Stark would have backed Stannis and there would have been none of this King in the North talk.

Last night's ep also solidified my belief that The Hound will be the one to teach Arya how to be a killer. They've hinted at her future several times, and who better to take her down that path?

Jon Snow putting duty first over Ygritte is a stark contrast to Robb placing love over his obligations to Walder Frey. Ultimately, it cost him everything.
Kind of nervous on "rooting" for anyone from here on out given how nice guys finish DEAD last in this series. |

I am actually pretty amazed that so many people got to watch that episode without anyone spoiling it for them.
