Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

Family is cool and all but if you post on CP you're going to get the attention of LEOs and lawyers and doctors, the Chiefs front office and more than likely Homeland Security. All my family would do is "omg" it on facebook.

So they don't ping anything to a tower or anything to ask for data?

I guess when I think about it, they wouldn't really need to ask, though, right? If they're on, they just receive transmissions and the tower or satellite is pinging stuff out.

How does the tower know where the GPS is, though? My watch can track me to within a few feet. Is it based on the time it takes to reach the watch from the tower? But if that's the case, it would have to be triangulating between two or more towers, which means that some multiple of things is talking to each other.

You're thinking of a phone with GPS, not a true GPS device.

A phone send and receives data, via a tower. A phone location can often be triangulated by it's proximity to two or more towers.

That's not GPS, though.

[LOCATION] will correspond to the state or country that is two to the west of the place I'm being held hostage. If I don't know the location, I'll use the term "Martha's Vinyard".

[PLAYER NAME] will correspond to a 10x10 grid in the state or country, where 1 is the northwest corner, 10 is the northeast corner, 91 is the southwest corner, and 100 is the southeast corner. If I don't know the location, I'll use a coach's name.

So if I post something like this:

If I was ever to take a trip to Texas, the Chiefs player I would most like to travel with is Derrick Johnson.

it means that I'm being hold hostage in Mississippi, and I'm somewhere in the middle of the state, very slightly south of the middle. In that case, you would send the FBI to somewhere around Carthage, Mississippi.

Got it?

So how does my watch work? I always assumed it was sending a ping somehow.

What kind of watch do you have?

A GPS receiver is just that, a GPS receiver. It knows it's own location based on the signals it receives from satellites. Think of it as a modern-day compass. The satellites are your reference, ala the North Pole.

If your watch is reporting it's location to an external device or the Internet, it has connectivity other than GPS to do that.

I am still amazed that in this day and age they still can't find this plane.

What is ironic is that after all the talk of how the world has become a much smaller place, you can't hide anywhere today, and technology can find you no matter where you go, it appears that the earth truly has many more places left to discover and find......
