She's a boring character to me. In the books and in the show.

Not all of Dany's chapters in ADWD are boring, though several of them are. But even her chapters are more palatable in a combined read with AFFC because they are more spread out that way. Jon's chapters also drag on a bit in some cases in ADWD.
The problem is that ruling is kind of boring, and watching Jon and Dany learn to rule and struggle making all the minutia decisions they have to make is just not super entertaining reading and pales to the action in prior books when they were waging wars and gaining their positions. But the focus on ruling is important to the overall story, and to the theme of power and the game of thrones. Only the Lannisters have been able to make ruling less boring, and that's because Tyrion is always interesting, Cersei is crazy and is fun to watch implode, and Tywin was just a ruthless bad-ass who never had to struggle making hard decisions like Jon and Dany who have a conscience. GRRM is making a point...Ruling is hard, tedious and often thankless, and every decision, even if made for good reasons, can have negative and/or unforeseen consequences. But you can't go into AFFC and ADWD expecting them to be like ASOS, because they are not that book and are not trying to be. |

Her chapters slow down in ADWD no doubt, though I still liked the last few Dany chapters in that book. Really, once she decides to lock up her dragons, she becomes boring and annoying until her last few chapters when she flies off on Drogon and meets up with the Khalasar. |

I can't disagree with that. Basically all the characters/chapters have been abysmal in 4. I truly have zero desire to finish the book but I'm sure I will being so far along already. 1-3, very entertaining. First half of 4 and my outlook on the rest, I could not be much less interested than I am now...

If she showed more tit, she'd be less boring. I can't speak on the books, but in the show she bores me. Im not really into her story line yet.

Martin may have a ton of valid reasons, be supported by publishing realities I don't understand, ect, but in the end I just wouldn't have let it happen no matter what it took. |

Over half way through ADWD now. What a painstakingly awful read. 16 pages completely summed up by Stannis and his army marching north and it continues snowing. 15-20 pages in a Danys chapter amounting to a few dead people overnight and the slavers still pissed. 17 more Tyrion pages with a couple witty lines from him and they are still lost at sea.
After watching he first five seasons before reading the books I regret ever starting books 4-5. GRRM should have left writing lengthy tomes to Rand, Murakami, Proust, Cervantes, Tolstoy, etc. I can't think of another lengthy read that I have enjoyed less. This far in there is no choice but to finish. |

That being said, like most GRRM's books, ADWD picks up and gets better in the last 1/3 of the book. Part of the problem is that you have also seen the show and so are not really turning the pages with any anticipation of learning what is going to happen next. For books 4 and 5, that is hard because they are longer and can be tedious in spots even if you don't know what's coming next. That is one reason why I'm so disappointed we won't get book 6 before the next season starts on HBO. These books work so much better to me if read first, then watched. Much less of a grind that way. Hopefully book 6 will be more like book 3 though since all the set up was in Books 4 and 5, so Book 6 is primed to kick off with a ton of action (battle in Mereen, battle in winterfell, all hell breaking loose at castle black, Jaime, Brienne..., Dani and the Dothraki, Cersei trial by battle, night king and white walkers, Arya as a full fledged assassin, etc.) Probably would have been better to eliminate some of the hiking in snow chapters in favor of pushing some of that action into book 5, but at this point, Book 6 sould be a real barn-burner (and hopefully this season of the show as well). In addition to those story-lines above, we have Jaqen H'agar in disguise at the Citadel as Pate and with a key to every door in the place, while also have Sarella Sand (one of sand snakes) there in disguise as Alleras the Sphinx, plus Marwyn left to go find Dany, and Sam is clueless in the middle of it all. Can't wait to see what is happeneing there. Plus what will Dorne do, they have their fingers in everything at this point once book 5 ends. To GRRM: Write you bastard, write!!! ... |

Edit: Done with the last Jon chapter. What. A Disappointment. Especially after having watched the Hardhome episode. No night's king or white walker battle make (almost) finishing the book a let down. If GRRM even does release the next book it certainly is set up to be a good read but I don't have a great deal of faith in that not being a letdown at this point. I'd love to be wrong.
