Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

Much better tracking. With all the technology in this world there is no reason to not be able to find a plane. I know the Ocean is huge and all that but there should not be this unknown of where the plane was actually flying. They should know the exact place that plane was. Not well it could be way over here or way over there.

If I can wear a watch that tracks my GPS location to within 10 feet on my runs, you'd think it would be possible for planes.

Sure, your watch can track your location. So can the GPS systems on the plane. But that doesn't mean that if you're lost in the middle of Africa that your watch is going to help anyone find you. GPS devices RECEIVE signals - they don't send them (unless they're sending data out via alternate systems of course).

Intellihub investigative reporter Shepard Ambella discovered that Phillip Wood, an American high-level executive at IBM, who was on Malaysian Flight 370, sent a text message and a pitch black photo from his iPhone on March 18 at 6:22 p.m., posted to a internet message board—ten days after the plane disappeared—with the following message:

I have been held hostage by unknown military personnel after my flight was hijacked…I work for IBM and I have managed to hide my cellphone… I have been separated from the rest of the passengers and I am in a cell. My name is Philip Wood. I think I have been drugged as well and cannot think clearly.

This could be a hoax, except for the accompanying photo that was sent with the text. While the photo is simply a darkened image, as most people know, iPhones embed a staggering amount of metadata when a photo is taken, that include the exact GPS longitude and latitude coordinates of the phone. The coordinates indicate that Wood, according to Google Maps, is inside a large building on the Diego Garcia Naval Base. That the U.S. military hijacked Malaysian Flight MH370, diverted it to Diego Garcia and has imprisoned and/or killed the 239 passengers.

I'm having a harder time believing an iPhone wouldn't be completely dead after 10 days with no charger, at least based on mine.
