Well this has devolved even worse than I thought it would. I guess I should've known better. This is actually a really interesting topic but you get most of the DC folks involved and away we go.

It's not really an interesting topic. People who refuse to acknowledge that the term redskins is a slur are morons. People who attempt to say that the Chiefs, Braves, and Indians would be next are morons.

What is missing here is the difference between IS a slur, and has been used by some intending it to be a slur.

It is undeniable, some in history used the term with the intent to belittle. But the NAs largely, overwhelmingly, refused to bite. This is because there is NOTHING WRONG with having red skin. This is different from references to blackness, because blacks have bitten on the 'shame' of the color of their skin [mark of Cain, et al].

Any word can be a slur, for the past decade 'Canadians' have been an open secret derogatory term for blacks [ie, 'don't go to that bar, there's a lot of Canadians in there'], simply because it bears no point of reference outside the common understanding of dog whistle racists.

If one were to disseminate the idea to the right set of bigots, you could make 'fluffy bunnies' a slur.

So a slur isn't an IS/ISN'T proposition, it depends on the reaction of those intended for the slur, and the prevalence of non-slurring usage.
