Star Wars: The Old Republic

Don't believe there's a dedicated thread, and since they're starting to release information now, I figure it's time for one.

This really reinforces my desire for Gunslinger....

Gunslinger is what I'm starting with, although Consular will be my eventual main (and I will be playing it some right from opening day). I think there's going to be such an overwhelming number of Jedi at the start. I know on the sith side, every weekend that I played, there had to be twice as many sorcerors as there was everything else.

That would be amazing if you could do it, although what would keep people from bouncing back and forth?
I can't really tell you how the story plays out, but the morality works a little differently than that. On the sith side, when I was playing light side (all my toons have been good so far) I was still working within the structure of the Empire. So while I could do "good" things, it was often in the context of best choice available. But as I understand it you cannot fall from the Jedi order and work against the Republic, or redeem yourself as a Sith and fight the Empire. You're always going to be what you are, meaning a Sith or a Jedi (or any of the other non-force users...), regardless of your alignment.

Now I have only played up until the mid-20s, and what's possible later on, I really can't say, but that's how it works as I understand it. I would not expect to be able to go in there and have a story drastically different playing dark side versus light. It's I think more a matter of the personality of your character. The story is the same, you're just going to be experiencing it through slightly different eyes. Which is usually the case with RPGs anyway.

(I hope that makes sense, I'm a little brain-fried tonight)

From a min-max perspective, it makes sense to be either really light or really dark, though, given that some items depend on that, correct?

It seems like that, but I think it's too early to really know that for sure. There's still talk of implementing gray-morality gear.

You can also take Diplomacy as a mission skill, and do your quests any way you want, if you really want to get min-max with it.

But yeah, right now, it would seem that going one way over the other is probably most favorable. And there's now some gear that has extra limitations beyond Light 1 or Dark 1. I stumbled across a light crystal over the weekend that actually prohibited use with Dark 1 or worse, rather than saying Light 1 was required. Which I'm guessing was to allow use by people who wanted to play neutral characters. But it's hard to tell.

The retail build it supposedly going live tomorrow morning, so there might be some changes coming.

If the retail build is supposed to go live tomorrow, will you be able to post the patch notes since the NDA is lifted?

Some stuff's already starting to leak in from the friends and family servers, including the following bit of awesomeness. This is really going to come in handy. Supposedly you get it at level 10. Only downside is that it has an 18 hour cooldown. I bet that's a typo and will change. Although if it doesn't, the good news is that it looks like we idiots who spent 150 bucks on the game might get one through the CE store with only a 60 minute cooldown. So no more going to spaceport, going to hanger, going to ship, traveling to new world, going to hangar, going to fleet...

It would be awesome if they put in a betrayal type of quest where you, rise / fall to the other side and could switch sides. It could be a long, painful one, but would still be awesome.

Apparently there is a final beta this weekend. I didn't get an invite (yet /cross fingers), but people are getting them.

Edit: As I understand it, all invites have been sent. /cry

I didn't get an invite either. Apparently it was a small group.

This two weeks to launch is going to drag by.
