Jaye Howard or Sean Smith

Which would you sign.

For the sake of argument, let's assume the following contracts (without getting into the details too much):

Sean Smith gets a 5 year, 52.5 million deal (10.5 per). First year cap hit is 6.6 m to fit cap constraints. Roughly on par with Byron Maxwell's deal (5th highest for a CB).

Jaye Howard gets a 4 year, 36 million deal (9.0 per). First year cap hit is 6.6 m to fit cap constraints. Roughly on par with Derek Wolfe's and Jurrell Casey's deals (6th and 7th highest for 3-4 DE).

I'd sign the DL and draft another CB in the first 4 rounds...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Why not?

We start off with 37m in cap space (after deducting the rookie pool) if we cut Grubbs as a June 1st cut and cut Fanaika.

That would get Howard and Smith under contract and still leave us with 25m in cap space for Berry, DJ, Allen, Hali and whoever else.

I guess after doing more research, I don't see the downfall.

But the contract is really only a 2 year deal.

If the front 7 and Sutton are doing their jobs, we shouldn't need all of the DBs to be high-paid studs. Peters is Peters. Gaines has a great work ethic and will return well enough. They drafted Nelson in rd 3. Draft an early CB, and you should have what you need at the position... along with Parker if absolutely needed.

For the sake of conversation, here's Earl Thomas' deal.

All 3 deals TOGETHER would cost us 20m in cap space and would leave us 17m for everyone else.

Smith, along with Weddle (from SD), will be in silver & black this year.

League history says he hits the wall in 2017 when he's 30.

And unlike a Rod Woodson, Smith is tall, long and lean.

He's not a "hitter", so a move to safety would likely be a abject failure.

Yeah and it's not an easy transition to safety, he doesn't really have great ball skills.

I'm not against keeping him, but he's not a priority for me

That's where I'm at as well.

If I had to choose, Howard and Berry are my guys, along with everyone on the free agent list not named Donald Stephenson.

We need to re-sign Smith and ADD a corner in free agency. Not let him walk. Remember how our defense looked without him? Yeah bad idea to let a good corner walk away.

I'd much rather have to find a new guy to replace Howard than replace Smith.
