Are You a Left Lane Dick ?

A general term for anyone found cruising in the passing (left) lane, holding up the normal flow of traffic.

If I'm in the passing lane and doing five or so over the speed limit and there are a bunch of cars on the right, and someone comes up behind me, I'll move to the right if there's room. If there's not, I'll maintain my speed until the right lane is clear. I'm not going to speed up another five and risk a ticket just because someone behind me is doing 15 over.

With the exception of places in town where a person needs to be in the left lane because it splits that way and one needs to be in the left lane or if in town during rush hour... a person or should NEVER be in the left lane unless they are passing. When you are done passing get back in the right lane unless you are coming up on more slow cars on the right AND no one is over taking you in the left lane. If they are, get out of the way.

If you are the worlds pace car or worse yet a left lane dick that speeds up when you try to pass on the right, you should die by falling down an elevator shaft falling into a pile of flaming aids needles after contracting gonorrhea from Dan Marino.

This is what I do. I'll do as much as 10 over for short distances. I absolutely will not try to squeeze into the right lane if someone is riding my ass. They're just gonna have to suck it up and wait.

Oh when practical one should not clog up the right lane preventing people from turning at a stop light if you are going forward.

If I am passing slow cars on the right, I'm not going to hit the brake and get behind them. I'll move as soon as I'm done passing.

And why attempt to pass another truck on an incline when you are going literally 3 miles faster. Grinds my gears.
Most commercial trucks have max of 65 -70. Mine was 67.

Now, if you get behind someone who is only going 60-65, you want to get around them. If my max is only 67, it's gonna take a bit to get around them. Believe me, they're not doing that on purpose.

2mph may not seem like much, but when you're driving 10-11 hrs a day it adds up.

Yeah, I think it's just situational awareness, having a feeling for whether the car behind you can pass you before you'd have to slow down, or if there's a good chance you would get stuck in the right lane.

I try not to be too impatient in that situation... and of course if traffic is fairly heavy, there's no point in stroking out about it..... except for all those times I have plenty of time to pass someone on the right because oh, there's a truck 100 car lengths ahead...

There is some common sense to all of this of course. One does not bash their way into a line of slower cars on the right but, if the next slower car on the right is ½ mile away get the hell out of the way of the faster traffic behind you. If people just try to recognize the left lane is for passing and try not to clog it up, traffic will flow and people can decide at what speed they want to go.

I can’t emphasize this enough if you are the pace car in the left lane that actually speeds up to prevent people from passing your slow ass when they have resorted to getting in the right lane to get around you. You are a jackass of the highest order.

I hate passing on the right. There's just something abnormal about it. The last time I did it, it was because there was a Subaru out in the passing lane with no one on the right, doing about five under. I didn't tailgate or anything but finally had enough and passed on the right. She then immediately and quickly got behind me and rode my tail. It irritated me so badly that I brake tested her. I can still she her reaction in my mind.

I think most people understand commercial vehicles can have some limitations most of those drivers are not the problem. Now bBeing stuck with two 18 wheelers going side by side for 5 miles down I-70 can be pretty annoying but, that is not typically from intentionally rude driving but a lack of ability to accelerate.

I have been schooled. Thank you. I will be much more understanding now. I do flash my lights as I pass on the right.

Part of my joy in driving cross country is the 'language' of the road.
