****Official Royals @ Rays Gamethread 8/28****

Happy Ben Zobrist Day! The guy is in their franchise 4, is having a video tribute to him shown before the game and his wife is singing the National Anthem before the game tonight. Anyways, Volquez on the mound tonight.

Yes, because our pen does so well when it is rested....

Stop comparing bullpen guys to starters. You don't need two or three days rest when you throw ten pitches.

Nobody got Gil Meche'd out there today. Volquez threw 106 pitches, indoors, without many high stress situations. He should be able to do that every time out.

Gil Meche threw 132 pitches the night Hillman torched him.

By all means, become a mlb manager and see how this strategy plays out for you

And a 119 the game before that. IIRC

Go check out Holland's stats on 3+ days rest. Relievers need frequent work or they lose their edge. That's why the Royals carry seven relievers.

Holland and Davis have both missed games this year because of stiffness. But all means, they are invincible.

The Royals were 8th in starters innings last year. This year we are 26th. That makes a difference. Most of these other teams at our level don't have to worry about playoff innings, but our guys do.

You're comparing apples to oranges. If they are hurt you rest them. Hell, put them on the DL. If they are healthy, they need frequent work.

So you're suggesting we throw a guy who's been by all accounts stiff, sore and hurt a majority of the year, even more than we already are. With a 13 game lead in the division and 7 game lead for home field? You do know they have to pitch in October also right?

I think the idea of an "overworked bullpen" is really overdone.
It's a group of 8 guys. SOME of them MIGHT pitch a whole inning on consecutive days. The idea of the whole lot of them being "overworked" and needing a rest is really a stretch.

Pretty sure Holland wasn't in the list of guys I said should pitch tonight. I am glad Ned is smarter then you guys, since he is sending in the guys I suggested.

I suppose all your years as a major league pitcher would tell you this?
