I wonder if there is any thought of trying Cooper at safety. He's got the size and speed for it.

I still believer that a lot of Nelson's apparent limitations in college are because of the shitty coaching DBs got at OS. Nelson played very well at the Senior Bowl when he got real coaching and got to work on his technique. It remains to be seen if he can continue to improve but I believe he will.

I will admit to being a bit of a homer on this pick.
I agree with you, I was just stating that the comparison didn't help his case. I was making the comparison too but realized it wasn't a good comparison.

Considering most corners in the league now are 6'0 the nickname seems appropriate, back then 5'9 was your average corner. He's a throwback.

Cooper is on his last leg right now. Maybe if we had a hole at safety....but we're pretty much full there. He either shows them something....or he's out.

Cooper is probably the odd man out unless he magically shows something in TC and preseason.

Who's out at safety? They've got Parker, Branch, Abdullah, McCray and Commings. I would assume that McCray is out if Commings stays healthy.
Smith, Gaines, Peters, Fleming, Nelson
Parker, Branch, Abdullah

I'd say those are 8 locks on 9 positions. Commings could stay healthy and still lose his job, IMO. I listened to an interview with Reid where he named about 12 DBs including a couple guys I'd never heard of but never mentioned Commings. I think he's out of sight, out of mind at this point. Unless he flat out takes a job, I don't think he wins any ties at anymore.

Cooper's best bet to survive may be trying to make that same swing CB/Safety conversion that Parker made. I'd say he has the physical tools to do it. If Parker goes down, it's not as though Abdullah or Branch could really play a single-high so why not have Cooper as your 4th safety? I think he could actually do a credible job back there if he got comfortable in the role.

EDIT: Looks like Frosty beat me to it.

Wasn't Abdulah playing single high next to Berry some? Not saying it is a good idea. Hopefully Cooper can live up to his potential. If that's at safety, fine. I'd love to have 4.3 speed at single high.

Depth chart is gonna be Smith and Peters as the starters and Gaines as the nickel guy with Nelson and Fleming backing them up. Cooper is gone.

I would think about keeping cooper as the extra db/safety as well as a special teamer.

McCray was one of the best special teamers on the team last year. No way they let him go

I'm not so sure that happens. I can see Gaines starting on the outside with Peters inside. Gaines is going to make a huge jump with an offseason to bulk up a little and add strength.

Regardless gaines and peters will start week 1 and 2 since Smith is facing a minimum 2 game suspension. Now when he gets back I think they will leave whoever is doing better out there opposite of Smith

It should be interesting but I'm not convinced that Peters is a sure starter. Yes he was drafted in the first round and yes he is aggressive but is slow. I still believe Fleming and Gaines will give him a run for his money since he needs to learn the system and Fleming and Gaines have a leg up in this area. I love good competition....something to look forward to

Real nice to see the team find a couple quality CB's in the draft instead of sifting through trash cans. Smith, Peters, Nelson and Gaines are the foundation of a group that can take on any group of receivers in the division.
